If the defensive line is the most veteran position group for the Wildcats, then the secondary must rank as the group with the least amount of experience.
The Wildcats boast just 24 games of CWU experience among the 21 players listed on the roster as either corner backs or safeties. The safeties group is made up almost entirely of freshmen (redshirt and true) and first-year transfers.
Jahleel Breland, a physical specimen at 6-3 and 205 pounds, leads the safeties group after playing in six games during the 2019 season. The redshirt sophomore did not see playing time last April at Montana and is the most experienced returner among the group.
Several transfers will provide support to Breland and the rest of the safeties.
Matt Wiitanen (Gannon) and
Mike Sims (Southern Utah) will be in the mix for playing time.
Over at corner back, redshirt sophomore
Patrick Rogers is being looked at to lead his group. Rogers played in 10 games during the 2019 season, making 16 tackles and intercepting a pair of passes. He made seven tackles last April at Montana.
Transfers will likely impact the Wildcats on the corners, as well.
Tristan West (Northern Arizona),
Michael Chisley (Southern Oregon), and
Nate Perkins (Northern Arizona) are expected to be in the mix for playing time. Perkins joined the Wildcats in time for the 2020 season, but the COVID pandemic limited him and the Wildcats to just one game.
