Wildcats Lose Defensive Struggle in Return to Tomlinson

ELLENSBURG, Wash.—It was their first home game in 686 days, but all the pregame excitement couldn't carry the Central Washington Wildcats to victory.

Angelo State's Nathaniel Omayebu scored from one yard out with 48 seconds to play, lifting Angelo State to a 14-9 win, Saturday at Tomlinson Stadium.

Omayebu, who finished with 100 yards on 24 carries, was stuffed twice inside the two-yard line before finally getting the nose of the ball across the endzone line for the go-ahead score. The touchdown capped a 9-play, 69-yard drive for the Rams (3-1), the longest drive of the game for either team.

The Wildcats were unable to mount much of a challenge in the final 48 seconds, as they picked off a Hail Mary pass in the end zone as time expired.

Central Washington (2-2) struggled on the offensive side of things, gaining just 202 yards. Running back Rashaad Boddie ran for 104 yards but needed 32 carries. CWU passed for just 114 yards as quarterback JJ Lemming was 9 of 32 passing.

The Wildcats relied on three Patrick Hegarty field goals for offense, as the junior connected from 21, 29 and 40 yards out.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Wildcats took a 3-0 lead on Hegarty's 21-yard field goal with 10:39 before halftime. Angelo State answered with a 5-yard touchdown run from Austin Landry at the 3:13 mark as the Rams carried a 7-3 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Hegarty narrowed with gap to 7-6 with a 29-yarder at 10:21 of the third quarter, then gave the Wildcats a brief lead with a 40-yard kick at 13:17 of the fourth. That lead held up for the next 12:29 until Omayebu scored his game winner.

While Central's offense was struggling, its defense and special teams rose to the occasion.

Senior linebacker Donte Hamilton enjoyed one of the finest games of his career with 9 tackles, two sacks and a pair of breakups. The defense recorded five sacks overall, with Daeon Hudson, Matulino Masunu and Fred Feleti joining in on the act.

The Wildcats forced ASU into eight 3-and-outs, including seven straight drives over the second and fourth quarters.

The special teams unit was even better, as they blocked one punt and tipped two others. Punter Van Soderberg punted seven times for an average of 37.3 yards per punt.

Game Notes
  • Rashaad Boddie finished with 104 yards rushing, his second straight game over the century mark
  • Donte Hamilton's two sacks give him a team-high 4.0 for the season in four games
  • The 253 yards allowed by the Wildcats on Saturday were the fewest for a CWU opponent since Simon Fraser had 158 on Oct. 26, 2019
