Newberry Goal Propels Wildcats Victory Over Saints 1-0

Box Score ELLENSBURG, Wash. - A goal from Lily Newberry late in the first half helped the Central Washington women's soccer team defeat the Saint Martin's Saints by a score of 1-0.

"I was happy that the girls were able to take everything we learned from last week and apply it today," Head Coach Lindsey Lee said. "Saint Martin's works very hard and it was nice to see us find some attacking success in the attacking third."

In a back and forth first half, it looked like the Wildcats and Saints were going to go to halftime tied at 0-0. But, Newberry had different plans.

In the 44th minute, the 'Cats had a corner kick. Ashley Peterson took the corner kick, sending the ball to Newberry well outside the 18-yard box. Newberry hit a screamer finding the back of the net, giving the Wildcats a late lead entering halftime.

"Lily is a great long-range goal-scorer," Coach Lee said. "And we haven't gotten too many looks off corners, so I was glad to see us try a different approach."

In the second half, the Saints began to find some offensive pressure, but nothing testing the Wildcats defense to much. The Saints best opportunity came early in the second half when Maria Pagnotta had a clear shot opportunity but Kassandra Jaggard came up big, saving the shot.

Jaggard played the entire game in goal for the Wildcats, helping the team keep a shutout and logging four saves.

The Wildcats maintained their lead for the rest of the second half, preserving a 1-0 win.

CWU recorded 16 total shots on the day, six on goal. Jaxyn Farmen lead the team in shots (3). Emily Darcy, Jordan Bartlow and Newberry logged two shots each.
