Wildcats See The Rays Of Sunshine As Another Record Is Smashed In Win Over Walla Walla

YAKIMA, Wash. – The Central Washington women's basketball team (10-1) defeated the Walla Walla Wolves Monday evening by a 92-44 victory thanks to ANOTHER record-setting performance, this time by Valerie Huerta AKA Sunshine.

QUOTE FROM HEAD COACH RANDI RICHARDSON-THORNLEY

"I'm happy to get the win and go into the break 10-1. We will see how well our preseason served us quickly upon our return with a tough road trip at Montana State-Billings and Seattle Pacific. Sunny had a phenomenal game and it's fun to see her come into her own and be herself out on the floor."

THE RECORDS…SHATTERED…AGAIN

The Wildcats went two for two in games this weekend with some sort of record being shattered. Saturday was Samantha Bowman's new rebounding records, today was Sunshines scoring records. With 46 points on the night Sunny set a new school and Great Northwest Athletic Conference single-game scoring record. BUT WAIT THERE'S MORE. Sunshine with her 18 converted field goals also broke the record for the most made field goals in one game.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Wildcats two top scorers led the charge to open the night as Bowman and Sunshine would go back and forth with buckets to put CWU up 9-0 with seven minutes left in the first quarter. The Wolves would get on the board at the 6:16 mark but would see a big response within 30 seconds as both Sunshine and Claire Heitschmidt nailed back-to-back three-pointers. Asher Cai would also flex her shooting nailing one of her many threes en route to the 'Cats entering the second quarter up 25-14.

The Wolves would score first in the second quarter to bring them back within single digits. However, a layup by Shaylee Coulter-Fa'amafu, a three by Cai, a layup by Bowman, and a jumper by Ashley Schow solidified the Wildcats lead making it a 38-21 margin in favor of CWU. Riley Johnson would get in on the action nailing a three, but Sunshine took over scoring the last six points of the half putting the 'Cats up 47-27 entering the break.

The Wolves struck first in the third quarter, but the 'Cats responded with a 17-2 run with a major contribution from Sunshine as she got real hot real quick from all over the floor. Bowman, Schow, and Heitschmidt also got in on the action. Sunshine and Cai rounded out the scoring of the third quarter putting the 'Cats up 70-37.

The 'Cats picked up right where they left off to start the fourth, going on a 14-0 run in less than four minutes, all split between Bowman and Sunshine. The Wolves got back on the board at the 3:48 mark and followed it up with another bucket. However, the power of Sunshine was too much as she scored the next five of seven points and, in the meantime, breaking her records. Cai rounded the game off with a three-pointer to seal the 92-44 victory.

The 'Cats had themselves a day shooting 55.2 percent from the field, 37.5 percent from three-pointers, and 75 percent from the free-throw line. They outrebounded WWU 51-29. Sunshine led all scores with 46, while Bowman and Cai each had themselves a double-double performance. Bowman with 19 points and 15 rebounds and Cai with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Maeda kept doing what she does and dished out a game high nine assists.
