Wildcats Outlast Yotes in 14 Innings, 10-9

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif.—Central Washington plated an unearned run in the top of 14th and escaped with a 10-9, extra-inning victory against CSU San Bernardino in the final game of a five-game series on Sunday.

After battling through four scoreless extra innings, the Wildcats (4-5) broke through in the 14th. Charlie Larson opened the inning with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Trevor Tripoli, and scored when CSUSB's shortstop misplayed Zach Berryman's one-out grounder. Jonathan Garza II (1-1) set down the Yotes in order in the bottom of the frame to preserve the victory.

The Wildcats started the day strong, getting a pair of runs in the first inning on an RBI single by Austin Ohland and a run-scoring double from Michael Copeland for a 2-0 lead.

The Yotes added a single run the bottom of the inning but Central bounced back in the top of the third when Ohland blasted a 2-run home run for a 4-1 lead.

CSUSB took control of the game with a 7-run bottom of the third. The Yotes knocked six hits and, when the dust settled, they held an 8-4 lead.

The Wildcats chipped away at the deficit, getting two runs in the top of the sixth on an RBI sacrifice bunt by Tripoli and a single by Zach Berryman, trimming the deficit to 8-6.

A three-spot in the top of the seventh briefly gave the Wildcats a 9-8 lead, but the Yotes tied it in the bottom of the frame, ultimately turning the game into a multi-inning marathon.

Central banged out 18 hits on the day, as eight players had at least two apiece. Ohland finished the day 3-for-7 with a homer and three RBI. Berryman, Copeland, Larson, Tripoli, Adam Fahsel, Austin Hauck, and Michael Peter each had two hits. Tripoli and Berryman each had a pair of RBI.

Garza picked up the win by tossing 2.0 inning of 1-hit relief. He struck out three and didn't walk a better to earn his first victory of the season.

The Wildcats next take on Lewis-Clark State in a four-game series, beginning 3 p.m., Friday, in Lewiston, Idaho.
