Albertin, Hansen, Smallbeck Lead Wildcats at WSU Meets

SPOKANE, Wash.—Austin Albertin, Meagan Smallbeck and Makenna Hansen led Central Washington on the first day of the Washington State Open, Friday at The Podium.

In the WSU Invitational – a meet running simultaneously to the Open and at the same venue which actually started on Thursday with multis – the Wildcats didn't fare quite as well in just a small handful of events.

In the Open, which features competitors from several PAC-12 schools and a total of 22 Division I programs, the Wildcats acquitted themselves well, garnering nine Top 10 finishes on the day.

"It was the usual suspects today with a couple of good placings," head coach Kevin Adkisson said. "Solid days overall for a lot of people with several PRs. The goals we had were to build some momentum. We've had some tough weeks of training but people are showing good progress. We competed well today."

Albertin was the top finisher for the Wildcats, placing third in the 400m in a time of 49.40. Smallbeck was fourth in the weight throw with a distance 16.99 meters, and Hansen finished seventh overall in the 60m dash at 7.76.

Earlier in the day, Hansen broke her own school record in the 60 for the third time this season, clocking a 7.73 during qualifying.

"Makenna did her thing again today," Adkisson said. "She took a bigger chunk off her record today and she even had a personal record in the 200, so a good solid day for her."

On Friday, McCall DeChenne and Sarah Sewell both participated in the Pentathlon as part of the WSU Invitational. DeChenne placed 16th, while Sewell finished 17th. Both competitors finished strong in the final event, placing 3-4 in the 800m.

In the second day of the Invitational, only the women's Distance Medley Relay team placed in the Top 10, as the quartet of Kay Lester, Madison Thompson, Caitlin Gohr and Madison Child finished seventh in a time of 13:32.19.

Both meets continue on Saturday.
