Nighthawks Elude Wildcats on Day One

NAMPA, Idaho.— A combined 18 hits on the day was not enough as Central Washington dropped games one and two of its four-game Great Northwest Athletic Conference series 7-4 and 17-4 to Northwest Nazarene on Friday night.

The pair of losses drops Central to 11-24 overall and 5-13 in GNAC play, while the Nighthawks move up to 21-13 overall and 13-5 in conference play.

Zach Berryman had the only four-hit day for CWU including a double alongside one run scored, and one run batted in (RBI) on a sacrifice fly.

Adam Fahsel and Michael Copeland both added three-hit days for Central. Fahsel scored two runs in the night cap while Copeland scored one run in each game alongside a single RBI in game two.

Tyler McClain gave the Wildcats a chance in game one, hitting a two-run double off of the center field fence to tie it up 3-3 in the top of the sixth inning. The Nighthawks added an insurance run on a double from Grant Kerry in the bottom of the inning to retake the lead 4-3.

A balk brought home Austin Ohland in the seventh to tie it back up 4-4. Central held the Nighthawks down into the ninth, when a three-run homerun from Alex Salsman won the game for NNU 7-4.

Max Holtzclaw (3-0) earned the win in game one for Northwest Nazarene, forcing a ground ball double-play from the lone batter he faced ahead of the walk-off in the following half inning.

The Wildcats gave themselves a chance in game two, scoring three in the top of the sixth by way of a Michael Copeland single through the middle and a Michael Peter double to left center field. Unable to do anymore damage, the Nighthawks tacked on seven more to win 17-4.

Northwest Nazarene's Brock Moffitt (3-1) took home the win in game two. Moffitt allowed just three earned runs on eight hits, one walk, and eight strikeouts through 5.1 innings.

Haden Keller, Duke Pahukoa, Kyle Payne, and Ryan Dearing all had four-hit days for NNU. Pahukoa led the Nighthawks with three runs and five RBI's.

The Wildcats and Nighthawks continue their four-game GNAC series tomorrow, April 9th, with another doubleheader scheduled for 12:00 p.m. PST.
