Women's Basketball Inks Smith From CUI

ELLENSBURG, Wash. – Central Washington University women's basketball is excited to announce the addition of Malia Smith for the 2022-23.

Smith is a 5-foot-4 guard from Snohomish, Washington and joins the Wildcats from Concordia University Irvine. She graduated from Glacier Peak High School. Smith set the Glacier Peak record for threes in a game, knocking down eight. During her senior season, she shot 45 percent from beyond the arc and averaged 13 points per game. Smith is a two-time All-Wesco Second Team selection. She was named Player of the Game in the state semi-final contest.

"We are excited to be adding Malia to our team," CWU Head Women's Basketball Coach Randi Richardson-Thornley said. "She can shoot the ball at an elite level which is what we love in our system. Additionally, she has a high basketball IQ which will translate well the high level GNAC competition we play."

In her freshman season at CUI, Smith appeared in 18 games. She compiled 108 minutes of action, tallied 19 points, 10 rebounds, four assists, four steals, and all six of her buckets were from beyond the arc.

"I chose CWU because of the amazing community and basketball program here," Smith said. "Everyone was so welcoming and it felt like home!"

Smith plans to major in Elementary Education. She is the daughter of Kellie and Jeff Jorgenson.
