Wildcats Sweep Wolves, Jump to 1-1 in GNAC Play

MONMOUTH, Ore. - The Central Washington University volleyball team swept the Western Oregon Wolves (25-16, 26-24, 27-25) on Thursday. The win gives CWU a 6-4 record, 1-1 in the GNAC.

"We served very well and played good defense," Head Coach Mario Andaya said. "It was nice to convert the digs into points."

The 'Cats top performer was Tia Andaya, who logged another double-double (13 kills, 28 assists).

Ashley Kaufman led the team in kills (19). Marianna Payne registered 14 kills. Sydney Remsberg recorded 19 assists. Hannah Stires led the team in digs (19). Emma Daoud-Hebert and Andaya both had three assists.

"Sydney and Tia did a great job setting. Ashley, Tia and Marianna scored efficiently," Andaya said. "Our passing was steady so that always helps."

The Wildcats had an attack percentage of .355 and held the Wolves offense to a percentage of .212.

The Wildcats jumped out to an early 16-6 in the first set, including a seven point run. WOU looked to cut the deficit, but the 'Cats kept on the pressure and a Kaufman kill closed it out 25-16.

Early in the second set, the Wildcats held a 4-0 lead. Instead of pulling away from the Wolves, the match score stayed close, although CWU didn't relinquish their lead.

That was the case until late in the set when the Wildcats fell behind 18-19. CWU responded, taking four of the next five points with kills by Andaya and Payne, to take the lead 22-20.

The Wolves bounced back, taking the next three points. But the Wildcats got hot when it mattered most, taking four of the last five points, capped by a kill from Andaya, to take the set 26-24.

The third set started relatively close, as CWU took a slight lead but nothing more than a couple points. At 11-9, the 'Cats went on a run, taking nine of the next 19 points to make the score 20-13.

Looking to avoid being swept, the Wolves went a run of their own, taking 11 of the next 14 points. But, just like the second set, the Wildcats caught fire in the clutch. They took four of the last five points, capitalized by a Payne kill. The set ended 27-25 as the 'Cats clinched the sweep.

The Wildcats (6-4, 1-1 GNAC)  will be back in action Saturday, Sept. 17, in Lacey, Wash. as they take on the Saint Martin's Saints at 5:00 p.m.
