Wildcats Sweep Biola, Fall to #7 CSUSB in Four Sets

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 LOS ANGELES, Calif. - On the last day of action at the Cal State LA Invitational in Los Angeles, Calif., the Central Washington University volleyball team swept the Biola University Eagles 3-0 (25-18, 25-13, 25-14) and lost to the #7 Cal State University San Bernardino Coyotes in four sets (18-25, 25-19, 22-25, 23-25).

QUOTABLE
On win vs. Biola: "We had very good rhythm offensively against Biola.  Emma set the tone for us that match at the net.  Ashley was a rock passing which allowed us to side efficiently," Head Coach Mario Andaya said.

On loss vs. Cal State San Bernardino: "We had some trouble with their serving tonight.  We competed but gave up too many runs," Andaya said.  "We'll learn from this."

MATCH RECAPS
The morning started with the Wildcats taking on the Biola Eagles. In the first set, CWU jumped out to an early 7-3 lead, thanks to kills from Andaya and Emma Daoud-Hebert along with a pair of aces from Kylie Thorne.

Biola stayed close and a three-point streak brought the score within one, with the 'Cats leading at 13-12. CWU responded, taking seven out of the next 10 points, expanding the lead to five at 20-15.

Once again, Biola went on a three-point streak but the Wildcats responded decisively. CWU took five straight points, winning the set 25-18. On the set-ending streak, Andaya and Thorne logged kills, along with an ace from Rachel Lambrecht and a block from Daoud-Hebert and Andaya.

The Eagles and Wildcats battled back and forth to start the second half. At 9-9, the Wildcats went on a four-point run. During the run, Andaya and Thorne logged kills.

At 15-12, CWU went on another run, taking 10 out of the next 11 points. The last two points of the set came from aces by Stires. The 'Cats took the set by a score of 25-13, positioning the team to potentially pull off a sweep.

In the third set, Biola took a quick 4-9 lead. After that, CWU went on a dominant run, taking 14 out of the next 17 points, making the score 23-12. That run positioned the team to finish the set and kills from Andaya and Thorne did just that. The Wildcats won the set, 25-14.

CWU had a strong attacking percentage of .400 while holding Biola to .120.

Against Biola, Thorne and Andaya led the team in kills with nine each. Thorne tacked on six digs and four aces. Andaya tacked on 11 assists. Daoud-Hebert led the team in blocks (6) while Marianna Payne recorded five blocks. Sydney Remsberg led the team in assists (21). Stires led the team in digs (9).

The Wildcats took on the #7 CSUSB Coyotes in their evening match. The first set started off tight. Midway through the first set, the 'Cats held 15-11 lead.

Unfortunately, that's when things turned south for the Wildcats. The Coyotes got hot, taking 14 of the next 17 points, and CWU lost the set 18-25. Alyssa Smith, Payne, Daoud-Hebert, Andaya, Thorne and Kaufman recorded kills in the first set.

The CSUSB momentum carried over at the start of the second set as the Wildcats found themselves down 1-4 early. But, they didn't let that momentum last for long as CWU took the lead at 10-9 after a block by Andaya and Smith.

Once the 'Cats got the lead, they never gave it up. They won six of the next nine points, behind kills from Andaya, Thorne and Daoud-Hebert, to expand the lead to 16-12.

The Coyotes tried to cut the deficit, but the closest they got was at 17-15. A three-point run with kills from Smith and Andaya along with a Kaufman ace closed out the set in favor of the Wildcats, 25-19.

The Coyotes started set three strong as the Wildcats fell behind 8-14. The 'Cats clawed back and went on a three-point run later in the set, with kills from Andaya and Remsberg and a Kaufman ace, to tie the set at 19-19.

CSUSB responded, taking four straight points. The deficit was too large for the 'Cats to surmount and they dropped set three, 22-25.

The fourth set started close with both teams tied at 5-5. CWU proceeded to go on an eight-point run, thanks to kills from Smith, Andaya and Kaufman along with a trio of aces from Remsberg, to go up 13-5. The Wildcats maintained the lead for a while and the score was 21-14 later in the set.

The Coyotes battled back, tying the set at 23-23. CSUSB's momentum continued as they took the next two points and the Wildcats lost 23-25.

Andaya logged a double-double with 12 kills and 17 assists. Kaufman had 11 kills and 14 digs. Remsberg led the team in assists (27) and added five aces. Stires led the team in digs (17). Thorne recorded nine kills and seven digs. Daoud-Hebert logged eight kills.

"We had a lot of high-level play from everyone all weekend.  I thought Sydney was the best setter in the tournament," Andaya said.

After winning three of their four matches in Los Angeles this weekend, the CWU's record now sits at 5-3. Their next match is on Sept. 10 in Nampa, Id. as they'll take on Northwest Nazarene in the GNAC opener. The match is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
