Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Wildcats Fall to Cal Poly Humboldt in Season Opener, 0-1

SEATTLE, Wash. – Central Washington women's soccer fell in their season opener 0-1 to Cal Poly Humboldt in the SPU Kickoff Classic on Thursday night.

"The girls fought hard today. I am grateful for the hard work and learning opportunity this game provided. We are looking forward to another game on Saturday." Said head coach Lindsey Lee.

FIRST HALF
  • Physicality and defense ruled early in the match as the Wildcats were able to hold off three chances from the Lumberjacks.
  • Casey Park took a long shot in the 14th minute that just sailed over the bar. Then, in the 22nd minute, Tatum Zuber made a move to the top of the box and unleashed a shot that just missed the crossbar.
  • Cal Poly Humboldt kicked off the scoring in the 33rd minute when Brooke Weese fielded a pass in the box from Annie Hoffman and buried it past Jaggard in the lower left corner.
  • The 'Cats responded shortly after when Emily Darcy lifted a shot into the box that was deflected back into the center, but the Lumberjacks were able to eventually clear it.
  • Kassandra Jaggard turned away four of the five shots on frame in the first half. Her clutch save on a point-blank shot from Janikowski helped keep the game scoreless in the early stages of the match.
  • Cal Poly Humboldt out shot the 'Cats 8-2 and had three corners, one more than Central Washington.
SECOND HALF
  • Lily Newberry and Grace Jackson made two key defensive plays at the start of the half to preserve the scoreline.
  • The Lumberjacks kept up the offensive pressure culminating in a great scoring chance in the 68th minute, Simone Tafoya found herself at the top of the box one-on-one with Jaggard who made a great one-handed stop.
  • Casey Park had an opportunity from a corner in the 76th minute that got blocked.
  • In the final minutes, Jaxyn Farmen threaded a beautiful ball to Emily Darcy in the box who lifted a shot that was saved by Carson Thompson-Terrel. Carson's save secured the 1-0 victory for Cal Poly Humboldt.

  • Central Washington will regroup and prepare for their next match against Westminster UT on Saturday, September 2nd at noon.
