Wildcat's Comeback Cut Short by Griffins

SEATTLE, Wash. – Central Washington Soccer's second half comeback against Westminster fell just short Saturday afternoon as the Griffin's held on for the 2-1 victory.

"The ladies found some great moments today. Can't wait to see how we respond next week at Chico State," said head coach Lindsey Lee.

FIRST HALF
  • The first ten minutes saw both teams exchanging chances. In the 18th minute Maggie McBroom threaded a pass to Tatum Zuber who unleashed a shot on goal from the left side of the box that was saved by Westminster's Mashaun Estridge.
  • Cassidy Orr took advantage of chaos in the box after a free kick and scored for Westminster in the 35th minute, giving the Griffins a 1-0 lead.
  • Central Washington did not go away revamping their attack that earned a corner in the 40th minute. McBroom lofted a spectacular ball in, but the header from Paige Savage was off the mark.
  • Freshman Sami Huber was determined in the last minute of the half as she split two defenders, dribbled down the sideline and sent in a wonderful ball to the boot of Cameron Sheets. Sheets took one dribble in the box and lasered a point-blank shot right at Estridge who turned it aside.
 SECOND HALF
  • Westminster came out firing early but could not capitalize. The Wildcats defense cleared away a corner attempt and then minutes later, Grace Jackson came up with a crucial blocked shot.
  • Cassidy Orr added to her goal total in the 67th minute. Orr was given a gift as the ball deflected off Jackson and dropped right to her. She took three dribbles and smoothed it past Patzer to make it 2-0.
  • Moments later Lily Newberry lined up a corner and lifted it into the box. Paige Savage leaped for the ball and headed it into the back of the net for the Wildcat's first goal of the season.
  • Central Washington continued to fight applying pressure and getting lots of chances from the 72nd minute on. Vogel's header late in the game provided the 'Cats a scoring chance but it was cleared out by the Griffins.
  • Westminster held strong through the final onslaught from the Wildcats to claim the 2-1 victory.
  • The Griffins out shot the 'Cats 16-10 and both teams put five on frame.
UP NEXT
  • Central Washington will regroup for two true road games in California next week. The 'Cats face Chico State Thursday at 7:00 p.m. and then play San Francisco State, Saturday at noon.
