'Cats Fall 0-2 to Nighthawks in GNAC Opener

ELLENSBURG, Wash. – Central Washington women's soccer fell to Northwest Nazarene 0-2 in a physical match on Thursday night.

FIRST HALF
  • Northwest Nazarene's Matisyn Ohlson found space early in the game and took a shot in the box that sailed high left over the bar. Ohlson and company didn't let up as the Nighthawks took 6 shots in the first 20 minutes.
  • Tatum Zuber responded for Central with a shot of her own in the 21st minute that was saved by Bailey Blancett.
  • The Nighthawks scored the opening goal in the 30th minute. Savanna Herz received a pass on the right side and crossed it to Nicole Lewis, who booted it high right and into the back of the net.
  • The Wildcats earned a free kick just outside the box in the 44th minute. The kick was spot on and it ricocheted right to Casey Park, she fired a shot at Blancett, but she got a hand to it and the Nighthawks cleared it out to take a one goal advantage into the break.

SECOND HALF
  • Savanna Herz opened the second half with two quick shots for Northwest Nazarene. Her first shot went off the left bar.
  • Kylee Gregory came into the game for Central Washington and applied pressure in the midfield. Gregory unleashed a shot, but it went wide right.
  • Madison Grande drew a foul just outside of the box for Northwest Nazarene in the 64th minute. Her free kick was a strong pass to Nicole Lewis, who fell along with two wildcat defenders. The ball bounced to Makayla Roggow and she laced it into the back of the net to extend NNU's lead to two.
  • In the 77th minute, Zuber took a hard low shot, but Blancett corralled it for the save.
  • The 'Cats had a late chance. A great pass sprung Emily Darcy one on one in the box, but she was stymied by Roggow, who won the one-on-one battle and got the clearance.
  • Northwest Nazarene outshot Central Washington 15-7 on their way to the 2-0 victory.

UP NEXT
  • The Wildcats will learn from this game and turn up the intensity on Saturday as they clash with Saint Martin's at 2:00 PM in Lacey.
