ABOUT THE JAVELINAS
Kingsville is currently 4-2 on the season and 3-1 in Lone Star Conference play. They opened their season with a 16-13 setback to Colorado Mesa at home before tackling Mississippi College 27-7 on the road to conclude their nonconference schedule. TAMUK went to UTPB and came away with a 20-14 victory to open LSC play and backed it up with a 56-21 victory over Sul Ross State and a 40-13 victory over Midwestern State, both at home. Last week, the Javelinas traveled to Angelo State and were shutout 38-0.
"They're loaded with talent, just like a lot of teams here in the Lone Star Conference," CWU Head Football Coach
Chris Fisk said. "They have very good personnel, especially at the line of scrimmage and in the box. Kingsville presents a lot of the same problems that UTPB presented us last weekend, so we'll have our work cut out for us. Then, of course we have another tough travel situation, a tough travel day for these guys having to get up, get a commercial flight to San Antonio, then drive down to Corpus Christi where we'll stay the night, but when you look at it, the seasons on the line it's kind of make or break for the Wildcats the rest of the way every single week. So, our guys have to step up and perform no matter what situation we're put into. Fortunately, we have some experience being on the road."
TAMUK is currently outscoring their opponents 26 points per game to 18.17 points per game their opponents are scoring. The Javelinas are outrushing their opponents 155.8 yards per game to an LSC-best 55 yards per game. However, Kingsville is being out passed by their opponents 164 yards per game to their opponents 250.5 yards per game. Overall, it's close, but Kingsville holds the advantage with 319.8 total yards per game to their opponents 305.5 yards per game.
The Javelinas have been led by Tague Sedtal who has completed 74/120 passes for 821 yards, seven touchdowns, and three interceptions. Roger Hagan has been one of the best rushers in the LSC, rushing 128 times for 588 yards and five touchdowns. Santana Scott has rushed 55 times for 210 yards and one touchdown. CJ Thompson, Jackson Allen, and Eli Martinez are all neck and neck and neck with each other in the receiving corps. Thompson leads the three in yards with 208 and two touchdowns on 15 catches, but Allen leads in total receptions with 18 for 205 yards and two touchdowns. Martinez has added 163 receiving yards on 17 receptions.
Travis Bielefeld and Jaylen Hackney currently lead the Javelina defense with 23 total tackles apiece with Bielefeld adding three tackles for loss, one pass breakup, three quarterback hurries, and one forced fumble and Hackney adding four tackles for loss, one interception, and one fumble recovery. Xavier Henderson and Demarcus Hendericks lead TAMUK with 8.5 tackles for loss with Hendricks leading the team with five sacks and is tied with Blake Jaques with five quarterback hurries. Rayden Campbell leads the Javelinas with two interceptions while Keion Thomas and Khalen Leonard are tied for the most pass breakups with five. Luis Jaramillo, Leonard, and Henderson all have blocked one kick each.
Luke Shaffer has 19 punts on the year for 818 yards for an average of 43.05 yards per punt. Shaffer has had three punts land inside the opponents 20-yard line. Gilbert Garza is 8/13 on the year in field goal attempts with his longest successful field goal coming in at 49-yards. Dillon Bredeson has been the main kicker for kickoffs, kicking 29 on the season for 1,752 yards for an average of 60.4 yards per kick and eight of his kicks landing for touchbacks. Zaraivion Armendarez has been the main returner for the Javelinas returning four punts for 73 yards and five kicks for 117 yards.
"Their defensive line is probably the best in the conference," Fisk said. "We have to be able to control the clock, control the football, keep ourselves out of third and long, which is their strength, they've been able to get teams into third and long all season and really be exotic in what they do. So, we're going to have to stay on schedule on first down and second down, and if we can do those things we should be able to have great showing or at least give ourselves a chance. A big week this week, we have a lot of work cut out for us, and we have a lot of work to do, we'll have to have a lot of really focused players and focused coaches to have a chance to go put a winning gameplan together for this weekend."
