Wildcats Cap Homecoming Off With Win

ELLENSBURG, Wash. – The Central Washington University Football Team (6-2, 5-1 LSC) earned their second-straight victory defeating the Midwestern State Mustangs (3-5, 2-4 LSC) in front of a pumped up Homecoming crowd Saturday evening by a 42-21 score.

QUOTING CWU HEAD FOOTBALL COACH CHRIS FISK

"I'm really proud of effort the guys showed tonight. They showed a lot of tenacity that will be crucial coming down the stretch of the regular season. I'm really excited to get to work and to move onto Angelo State for a big matchup down in Texas next weekend."

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Wildcats started the game with the ball, marching down field with big gains from Tyler Flanagan on the ground and a 13-yard catch from Darrien Gaines, but an incomplete fourth down pass gave the ball to the Mustangs.
  • MSU drove past the midfield mark, but Tanner Volk stopped them in their tracks with his second interception on the season, getting the offense the ball back on the CWU eight-yard line.
  • The 'Cats marched their way down the field, finding success in both the rush and pass that was capped by a 37-yard touchdown pass from McGill to Darius Morrison to nab the first points of the game. Cooper Britton drilled the point after touchdown attempt to make it 7-0 'Cats with 45 seconds left in the first quarter.
  • Josiah Cochran and Chase Loidhamer brought down the Mustang rusher for a loss of a yard to end the first quarter.
  • Big chunk plays by the Mustangs helped them drive down the field as the quarterback Matthew Duncan completed a 12-yard pass to Jailyn Robertson and with a successful PAT, tied the game at seven apiece with 12:13 left in the second quarter.
  • The 'Cats responded in a big way starting with a quick 18 yards by Cam Daniels on the ground, saw McGill connect with Jalen Grable for a 51-yard touchdown and with Britton converting the PAT put CWU up 14-7 with 10:39 left in the second.
  • Two plays later the offense came back on the field as Volk snagged his second interception of the game.
  • CWU saw big chunk plays from Grable and McGill that helped set up Tyler Flanagan to punch in a 41-yard rushing touchdown, and with Britton making his third PAT of the game saw the crimson and black on top 21-7 with 6:07 left in the second.
  • Midwestern State was driving down from their own 13-yard line, making it to midfield before a fake punt attempt pass was picked off by the myth himself, Tanner Volk for his third interception of the game.
  • The first half ended with the 'Cats offense stalling at the MSU 31 yard line and missing a 48-yard field goal attempt.
  • MSU came out of halftime blazing taking two plays as Duncan connected with Adam Johnson for a 77-yard touchdown to pull the Mustangs within one score, 21-14 CUW with 14:01 left in the third quarter.
  • Flanagan ate four yards on the first play of the 'Cats drive but pair of penalties on the Mustangs put CWU at the MSU eight-yard line setting up McGill for the easy eight-yard rushing touchdown and with Britton connecting on the PAT made it 28-14 crimson and black with 13:42 left in the third.
  • The Wildcat defense forced the Midwestern State offense to punt giving the ball back to the offense at the 'Cats nine-yard line.
  • The Central Washington offense did what they do best, get big yardage plays on the ground capped with an 11-yard rushing touchdown from McGill paired with the Britton PAT made it 35-14 CWU with 3:36 left in the third.
  • The third quarter ended with the Wildcat defense getting another stop and forcing MSU to punt.
  • CWU picked up right where they left off and marched down the field with a big connection from McGill to Gaines helping set up Flanagan for the two-yard touchdown and with the Britton PAT made it 42-14 CWU with 8:29 left in the game.
  • MSU ate up a majority of the rest of the time as they drove down the field and saw Duncan compete a 20-yard pass to Demonte Green for a touchdown making it 42-21 CWU with 2:54 left in the game.
  • The 'Cats saw Justin Brennan come in and finish out the game as CWU cruised to the 42-21 victory.
