QUOTING CWU HEAD FOOTBALL COACH CHRIS FISK
"I'm very proud of our guys tonight, they played hard and did what they needed to do to get the win. We're very excited for our players and their accomplishment of finishing second in the Lone Star Conference for the third consecutive season. We are excited for our second consecutive playoff appearance that we'll know more about tomorrow. Mostly, we're just excited to get back to work on Monday."
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Wildcats opened the game getting the ball and meticulously working down the field, settling for a 22-yard field goal from Cooper Britton to make it 3-0 CWU with 4:59 left in the first quarter.
- Western Oregon started their drive on their own nine-yard line and were able to make it to midfield to end the first quarter with CWU leading 3-0.
- A pair of penalties on the 'Cats to open the second put WOU in the redzone, but the Wildcat defense stiffened up and forced the Wolves to just a tie on a 32-yard field goal by Keaton Emmett to make it 3-3 with 12:48 left in the second quarter.
- CWU drove down the field, but ultimately couldn't find the endzone turning the ball over on downs on the WOU one-yard line with 3:58 left in the quarter.
- The Wildcat defense forced WOU's offense into a three-and-out, but the Wolves responded forcing the 'Cats into a three-and-out of their own giving the ball back to WOU with 1:03 left before halftime.
- The Wolves drove down the field, setting up for a 52-yard field goal attempt that would get blocked by Daniel Matagi to send the teams to halftime tied at three apiece.
- Both teams defense kept their end of the bargain to open the third quarter as a fourth down fumble by WOU cause by Chase Loidhamer was recovered by Mikaio Edward at the CWU 44-yard line to give the Wildcat defense their second drive of the second half.
- The Wildcats made the most of the fumble as Kennedy McGill connected with Darius Morrison, Marcus Cook, and Jackson McCann for first-down yardage, but the 'Cats couldn't strike the endzone as Britton drilled a 26-yard field goal to make it 6-3 CWU with 3:15 left in the third.
- Western Oregon's offense once again was forced into a three-and-out thanks to a third down sack by Brycen Indell giving the ball back in the paws of the 'Cats offense to end the third with CWU leading 6-3.
- A 15-yard gain by McGill as well as a pair of penalties by WOU helped McGill run in an eight-yard touchdown to give CWU a buffer and make it 13-3 in favor of the 'Cats with 12:41 left in the game.
- Both teams traded possessions the rest of the way with Wahi Emmsley earning an interception in the process to give CWU the 13-3 victory and all but seal the 'Cats spot in the NCAA Division II Playoffs.
