Cal State San Bernardino Wins Game Four 8-4 to Force Series Split

SAN BERNARDINO, California. – Central Washington baseball lost 8-4 to fourth ranked Cal State San Bernardino on Saturday. The Coyotes scored a run in four straight innings, on their way to the win and the series split.

"I thought we battled. We didn't get key hits in situations we needed them, and they got key hits that cost us runs. We were in that game and just didn't capitalize when we should have. Daniel Charron pitched it well and our entire pitching staff has been great."

SCORING
  • The 'Cats have been putting up runs in the first inning all series and that continued today when Ben Leid put Central Washington up one in the first when he mashed an RBI single to left center.
  • The Coyotes responded in the third inning. Jason Shedlock lifted an RBI single to the right side and then Daniel Garcia Junior roped a double down the right field line that scored Kataoka and gave Cal State San Bernardino the 2-1 lead.
  • Kevin "Baba" Varner Jr. came up to bat in the sixth and roped a solo home run over the center field fence which brought the 'Cats within a run. In the eighth inning, Varner Jr. hit his second home run of the game. This time, he lifted a two-run shot to right field.
  • Cal State San Bernardino scored a run in the final four innings to secure the 8-4 victory.
HITTING
  • Varner Jr. led the 'Cats going 3-4 from the plate. He drove in three runs, hit two homers, and roped a double.
  • Marcus Manzardo hit 2-4 and scored a run for the 'Cats.
  • Austin Ohland went 1-4 with a double and Ben Leid had his RBI single to left center for his lone hit of the day.
  • The Coyotes had 13 hits. Giovanni Del Negro and Daniel Garcia Jr. both went 2-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Jason Shedlock had two hits in five at bats and drove in a run.
PITCHING
  • Daniel Charron started for Central Washington and pitched five and two thirds innings. Ove the 5.2 innings, he struck out three and walked two batters. Logan pierce came in and then Beau Kearsey relieved him. In his one inning of work, Kearsey fanned one batter.
  • In the final inning, Nolan Murphy recorded two outs and Nick Lindholm got the final out of the game.
  • Luke Hempel got the start for the Coyotes and earned his first win of the season. Hempel pitched six innings, recorded four strikeouts, and only allowed two runs.
ON DECK
  • Central Washington heads to Turlock California next week for a four-game series against Stanislaus State. First Pitch of game one is on Friday, February 16th at 5:00 p.m.
