Central Washington Splits Doubleheader with Linfield, Wins Game Two 6-5

MCMINNVILLE, Ore. – Central Washington fell 6-0 in game one, but scraped together the 6-5 game two win in Friday's doubleheader against Linfield.

"We didn't quit, kept pushing, and got some good things done. I give the guys a lot of credit for finding a way to get the win in game two. We didn't play our best baseball today. Alex threw fine, and Busta did a good job. Hopefully, we can get some rest and be consistent tomorrow."
 
Game One: Linfield 6 – Central Washington 0
SCORING
  • Linfield struck first plating two runs in the first inning. In the fourth inning, Trent Wainfeld's double to left field pushed across another run. Garret Ringer followed that up with an RBI single, which increased Linfield's lead to four.
  • Linfield scored their fifth run in the seventh inning from a Central Washington error. Nick Holm's RBI single drove in the sixth and final run of game one.
HITTING
  • "Baba" Varner Jr. went 2-4 with a pair of singles and a stolen base for Central Washington. Andrew Sharp had a single in four at bats and Jake Madson tallied a hit.
  • Elijah Maris was the best bat for Linfield. Maris went 2-5 with a double, an RBI, and two runs scored.  
PITCHING
  • Alex Brady started for Central Washington, pitched four innings, and recorded one strikeout. Gabe Bustamante came in to start the fifth inning. He threw three frames and fanned one batter. Nolan Murphy and Beau Kearsey were the final pitchers for CWU.
  • Camden Oram got the start for Linfield and earned his first win of the season. He had a terrific complete game, throwing nine scoreless innings. He only allowed four hits while also recording four strikeouts.    
Game Two: Central Washington 6 – LINFIELD 5
SCORING
  • In the first inning, Sharp lifted a single to left field that scored Austin Ohland and put CWU up 1-0.
  • A back-and-forth second inning saw the crimson and black tack on another run, but Linfield had an RBI single and scored two additional runs on a fielder's choice to take the 3-2 advantage.
  • Central Washington regained the lead with a sacrifice fly and a grounder in the third inning that scored two runs.
  • Down 4-3, Linfield tied it up in the fourth and capitalized in the sixth inning. Maris reached on a fielder's choice and Hunter Klingelhoffer scored, which gave Linfield the 5-4 lead.
  • Central Washington came up clutch at the plate in the seventh inning. Kellen Berg started the rally with a single to left field. Then, Marcus Manzardo roped a double to left field. Berg got tagged out at third. CWU needed to string together clutch hits with two outs, and they did just that. It started with Varner Jr's. RBI to right field. In the next at bat, Austin Ohland lifted one to left field. With two runners on, Sharp stepped up and hit one to right that scored Ohland and put the crimson and black up 6-5.
  • Drew Richardson came in and pitched the final inning for Central Washington. With two runners on and one out, Richardson forced two pop ups that ended the game, earned him his second save of the year, and secured CWU's 6-5 win.
HITTING
  • The Crimson and Black tallied 10 hits. Andrew Sharp led the way for Central Washington, going 2-4 with three RBIs.
  • Ohland went 2-2 at the plate with a single, an RBI double, and a run scored. "Baba" Varner Jr. had two hits in four at bats and drove in a run.
  • Linfield's Hunter Klingelhoffer was 2-3 with an RBI and a run scored.
PITCHING
  • Jonathan Garza II started game two for Central Washington. Garza II pitched five innings and recorded four strikeouts. Nolan Milliman threw one inning, fanned a batter, and picked up his second win of the season. Drew Richardson worked the final frame and earned the save.
  • Wyatt Hurley started for Linfield and pitched two and two-thirds innings while recording one K. Brian Mannion threw three and a third and tied up two batters. Gavin Ludlow worked one inning and recorded a strikeout.
ON DECK
  • Central Washington faces George Fox tomorrow in a Saturday doubleheader starting at 11:00 a.m.
