SEASIDE, CALIF- Central Washington University (1-0-0, 0-0-0 GNAC) earned a huge victory on the road against Cal State Monterey Bay (0-1-0, 0-0-0 CCAA) in a non-conference matchup on Thursday evening at the Otter Sports Complex. 1-0 was the result as CWU got their first ever win in Seaside, Calif.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The breakthrough came in the 59th minute as
Jordan Bartlow received the ball at the edge of the box and calmly tucked the ball in the bottom left corner of the net. Monterey Bay's defense was scrambling to recover but ultimately couldn't get to Bartlow fast enough. Goalkeeper
Leighton Menge played a pivotal role in today's shutout as she made five crucial saves including one with about three minutes left on the clock to keep the lead. The Otters outshot the 'Cats thirteen to four but it was CWU that made the most of their limited chances. In the final minutes, there was a lot of pressure put on by MB, but they couldn't score a goal to tie the match.
FIRST HALF
It was a scoreless first half that saw the Otters put together six shots while CWU couldn't get any shots off. The Wildcats finished the half with two saves and caught the opposition offside five times which showed their defensive identity.
SECOND HALF
The Crimson and Black came out of the break looking for a goal and got it 19 minutes into the half. Barlow led the team with three of the four total shots for CWU. CSUMB outshot the 'Cats seven to four but was not able to put the ball in the back of the net. Menge made three saves in this half and showed poise as MB were heavily pressuring the goal to score.
