PORTLAND, Ore. – Central Washington University's baseball team had a strong performance this past weekend, culminating in the selections of
Daniel Charron and
Brandham Ponce as the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week and Player of the Week, respectively, the conference announced Monday afternoon.
"It's a well-deserved award on both their parts," Head Coach
Desi Storey said, "Daniel did exactly what he needed to do. He set the tone for the staff in game one. He did a great job filling up the strike-zone, keeping them off balance. And Brandham had another great weekend; Had some clutch home runs, but also got key hits in moments when we needed him."
Daniel Charron had a stellar performance in the series opener against the Wolves. Charron pitched the entire nine-innings, earning a 4-0 shutout win in Saturday's first game. Of the 33 batters he faced, Charron allowed three hits, two walks, and struck out six.
Ponce had an excellent showing at the plate for the overall series. His offensive peak began in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader, when the Senior from Federal, Way, Wash. opened the scoring in the first inning with a three-RBI dinger to left center field, driving in
Travis Helm and
Baba Varner Jr. for the early 3-0 lead. Ponce wasn't finished though as he would give an encore with the bases load, driving a grand slam to right field to drive in Helm, Varner Jr., and
Justin Birch for seven total RBIs.
Ponce continued his offensive stride on Sunday, hitting two more home runs and driving in another seven RBIs in the doubleheader to make a total series count of 14 RBIs, nine hits, eight runs, and four home runs in 16 at-bats, recording a .316 batting average over the four-game series.
The Crimson and Black head back out on the road for a four-game series in Nampa, Idaho against Northwest Nazarene starting on Friday, March 14. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. PST.
