CWU Soccer Wins Two in a Row for the First Time Since 2020

BILLINGS, Mont. – The Central Washington Wildcats (2-5-3) take down the Montana State Billings University Yellow Jackets 1-0 on the road. This win marks the first time since 2020 that the Wildcats have won two matches in a row. Both sides of the ball are playing at a high level giving the Wildcats a record of 2-1-1 over their last four matches. Ever since their road tie vs Western Washington University (6-1-3), this looks like a whole new team.

QUOTING CWU HEAD WOMEN'S SOCCER COACH JOHN HAWKS:

"A quality full 90 minutes of ball by our group against a difficult system and well coached group in MSUB. The composure and play facilitation from a total of 11 on the offensive side of the ball and the commitment to defend was the difference tonight.

We will enjoy our fruits of our labor tonight; tomorrow we shift our focus to get ready for Saturday.  There is a lot of ball left and our future is bright … Go ''Cats!"

FIRST HALF:

The Wildcats were keyed in on the defensive side of the ball giving MSUB practically no looks for goal scoring opportunities. Only one shot was attempted by the Yellow Jackets all game and it took place in the first half of play. CWU Goalie Danika Galbraith recorded the Wildcats one and only save of the game on the Yellow Jackets lone shot attempt. This comes after the Wildcats 2-0 win over Saint Martin's University (1-8-1) where they only allowed the Saints to take six shots all match. The offensive side of the ball is creating goal-scoring chances as well with eight shots for the 'Cats in the first half of this match. None of them were able to find the net though despite strong efforts in the box. MSUB's Tenley Leffler had four saves in that half keeping the score at a 0-0 standstill going into half two of play.

SECOND HALF:

After 17 minutes of play in the second half, the Wildcats offense was too much for the Yellow Jackets as MSUB committed a foul inside the penalty area. This ultimately gifted the Wildcats the winning goal as Kylee Schreck hammered it home to take a 1-0 lead. The 'Cats did not look back after that as the defense was outstanding. No momentum was given back to MSUB at any moment as they couldn't get a single shot up in the second half of play. A dominant performance from CWU as they advance to 2-5-3 on the year and 2-2-1 in GNAC play.

NEXT UP:
A tough opponent waits for the Wildcats as they take on Seattle Pacific University (5-3-1). Momentum has been built for the 'Cats and we will see how far they can ride it as they search for a three-game win streak.
