Wildcats Slug 11 but Late Surge Sinks CWU in First Game, as CSUSB Completes Doubleheader Sweep

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – The Central Washington University baseball team dropped both games in a doubleheader against Cal State San Bernardino on Saturday.

GAME 1:
 
SCORING:
 
  • Central opened the scoring in the 2nd inning when Conrad Henkel lined an RBI double to left, bringing home Kellen Berg for a 1-0 lead.
  • The Wildcats' lead grew in the 4th as Andrew Charron launched a three-run homer to left, scoring Andre Garza and Berg to extend the margin to 4-0.
  • The Coyotes answered with a two-run homer later in the 4th, but CWU responded with a huge five-run 5th inning. Garza delivered an RBI single, two more runs scored on defensive miscues and a bases-loaded walk, and Ethan Buckley added a two-run double down the right-field line to make it 9-2.
  • CSUSB began to rally in the 6th, stringing together three RBI plays to cut the deficit to 9-5.
  • Another RBI single in the 7th trimmed the lead to 9-6 and continued to swing momentum.
  • The game turned in the 8th. A three-run homer from Garret Barto tied the score, and four additional runs crossed on consecutive run-scoring hits as CSUSB surged ahead 13-9.
  • CWU mounted a final push in the 9th when Kaiden Hernandez drilled a two-run homer down the left-field line to score Henkel and pull within two runs, but the comeback fell short in a 13-11 final.

  • Austin Cupic pitched five innings, allowing four runs, eight hits, facing 22 batters.
  • Lance Mittelman pitched two innings, allowing four runs, seven hits, and striking out one of the 13 batters he faced.
  • Drake Anderson faced one batter, allowing one run on one hit.
  • Kellen Berg pitched one inning, allowing four runs, three hits, and striking out one of the eight batters he faced.
  • Harrison Cordeiro pitched four innings for the Coyotes, allowing four runs, eight hits, and striking out six of the 21 batters he faced.
  • Brian Garcia pitched 0.2 innings for the Coyotes, allowing five runs, one hit, and striking out one of the eight batters he faced.
  • Kade Finazzo pitched four innings for the Coyotes, allowing two runs, five hits, and striking out three of the 17 batters he faced.

  • The Coyotes struck first as Juni Rodriguez hit an RBI single in first inning.
  • CSUSB's offense unloaded in the second and third innings, scoring 12 runs to take a 13-0 lead.
  • Central responded in the fourth when Andre Garza hit an RBI single to drive in Max Bledy for the Wildcats' first run.
  • San Bernardino answered right back in the bottom frame, scoring six more runs including a three-run homers from Garret Barto to take a 19-1 lead.
  • Andrew Charron hit his second dinger of the day in a solo shot to right field for CWU's second run of the game.
  • Barto closed out the scoring with an RBI double in the bottom of the sixth. The Wildcats would not get another run, and the game was called after the top of the seventh inning

  • Zachary Reynolds pitched 1.2 innings, allowing six runs, seven hits, and striking out two of the 13 batters he faced.
  • Logan Thompson pitched one inning, allowing six runs, four hits, and striking out one of the 10 batters he faced.
  • Gino Trippy Jr. pitched 0.2 innings, allowing five runs, four hits, and striking out one of the seven batters he faced.
  • Braeden Fagnant pitched 1.2 innings, allowing two runs, four hits, and striking out one of the eight batters he faced.
  • Drake Anderson pitched one inning, allowing one run, two hits, facing five batters.
