Wildcats Rally From Six Down but Fall in Thrilling Series Finale

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – The Central Washington University baseball team erased an early six-run deficit and briefly grabbed the lead late, but Cal State San Bernardino's answer in the seventh inning proved decisive as the Wildcats dropped a back-and-forth, high-scoring 16-12 contest Sunday afternoon at Fiscalini Field.

INSIDE THE MATCHUPS:

Final: Central Washington (12), Cal State San Bernardino (16)
Records: CWU (1-6), CSUSB (4-7)
Location: Fiscalini Field, San Bernardino, Calif.

QUOTING CWU HEAD BASEBALL COACH DESI STOREY:

"I felt like we let a couple get away. We worked real hard getting the offense going over the last week or so, and pitching had been improving and doing well. Defensively, we played decent. We made a couple mistakes that hurt us a little bit. We put double digit runs in 3 games and came out with only one win, so it was a little frustrating. We understand that San Bernardino can be a bit of a launching pad, obviously, we hit our share of balls out too. But overall, we just struggled at staying ahead in the count and keeping the ball down, so not the outcome we'd hope for."

SCORING:

  • CSUSB struck first with a leadoff solo homer from Jeremy Giesegh and a two-run blast later in the frame from Dom Dominguez keyed a seven-hit inning as the Coyotes surged ahead 6-0 before CWU could record the third out.
  • Central got on the board when Ethan Swenson launched a solo home run to left, trimming the deficit to 6-1, but CSUSB answered with another homer and a sacrifice fly in the bottom half to stretch the margin to 8-1.
  • After a quiet third, CWU's bats erupted. Singles from Logan Blank, Kellen Berg and Max Bledy loaded the bases, and Swenson's sacrifice fly started the comeback. Andre Garza hit an RBI single, while Sinclair Lee hit a two-run single to bring Central within reach, and Kaiden Hernandez followed with an RBI knock to cap a five-run inning as the Wildcats closed to 8-6.
  • The Coyotes scratched one back with an RBI single to make it 9-6, but the Wildcats kept the pressure on.
  • Central pieced together another surge in the fifth. Swenson drove in a run with a single, Lee ripped a two-run double, and Andrew Charron lifted a sacrifice fly. The four-run inning flipped the scoreboard and gave the 'Cats their first advantage, 10-9.
  • CSUSB responded in the sixth inning, using a bases-loaded situation and a two-run single to move back in front 11-10.
  • With a runner on, Kaiden Hernandez crushed a two-run homer to left-center, putting CWU back on top 12-11 and completing the Wildcats' comeback from six runs down in the seventh inning.
  • The lead didn't last, as a sacrifice fly tied the game, then a two-run double and an RBI single in the bottom frame of the inning pushed CSUSB ahead again 15-12.
  • The Coyotes added one more on an RBI single following a leadoff hit to extend the margin to 16-12.
  • Sinclair Lee singled to begin the final frame, but CSUSB retired the next three hitters to end the game as the Wildcats fell 16-12.
