ELLENSBURG, Wash. (April. 4) -- The Central Washington University baseball team earned a sweep on Sunday afternoon winning games three and four versus Western Oregon University thanks to quality starting pitching and an abundance of hits from the Wildcat offensive.
The two wins elevates the Wildcats to 17-18 overall and 8-12 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference as the Wolves fall to 16-18 overall and 12-7 in conference.
The Wildcats wasted no time getting the bats going in the first inning of the front end of the double-header. Hot-hitting
Darren Honeysett led off the first with a hit and later scored on a
Jonathan Dailey groundout.
Â
Central churned out two more runs in the second with a leadoff walk from
Cory Welch, which was followed by a single from
Jeff Beckman and two batters later scored on a hit by Honeysett.
Â
Central Washington didn't let up in the third and fourth as they tacked on a run in the third and fourth innings. The score remained 6-3 heading to the eighth before Western Oregon added a run of its own on a Cody Sullivan groundout that plated Garret Harpole.
Â
Although the Wildcats pounded out six runs on 10 hits,
Dustin Hamilton whirled five innings and surrendered only three hits and two earned runs. It took 95 pitches for Hamilton to finish five frames as he worked out of a jam in the fourth and fifth inning.Â
Cory Welch entered the game on the mound in the ninth and earned his seventh save on the season.
Â
Welch's day wasn't done yet, as he would start game two and pitched a complete game. Welch gave up three earned runs and relied on a Wildcat offense that turned in nine runs and 13 hits.Â
Â
In the first,
Myles Wesener, the pride of Brisbane, Australia, started things off with a bunt single, followed by a sharp line drive single to right by
Kasey Bielec advancing Wesener to third.
Benjamin Dunbar then singled home Wesener, and first baseman
Randy Fuller joined the action by reaching on an error that scored Bielec.
Jonathan Dailey followed with a single to score Dunbar giving the Wildcats a 3-0 lead.
Â
The Wolves answered in the top-half of the second on a sacrifice fly by Cody Poznanski to plate Nathan Etheridge. In the third, Marcus Hinkle hit a mammoth homer to left to put the Wolves within one.
Â
Central wasted no time answering scoring two more runs on a single from Fuller who eventually came around on a Dailey triple that took a long hop over the left fielder's head and reached the fence. Later in the inning Dailey scampered home on a wild pitch.
Â
Western Oregon scored one run in the fifth and sixth, but each time the Wildcats answered with two runs of their own. In the fifth, Matt Taylor singled and was driven in on a Michael Sherwin groundout. Cody Sullivan smacked a double into the left field corner and scored on a groundout by Jacob Whisler.
Â
Welch shut down the Wolves again in the last inning and sealed a series split for the Wildcats. The team will hit the road next weekend for a four-game series at Montana State-Billings.
