ELLENSBURG (Nov. 14) -- Senior
Erin Norris (Spokane/Mead HS) had 12 kills, three aces, and five blocks in her final collegiate match as Central Washington wrapped up its 2009 volleyball season with a 25-18, 25-20, 25-13 win over visiting Saint Martin's on Saturday night at Nicholson Pavilion.
Central finished with a 16-11 overall record -- its seventh .500 record or above in the past eight seasons -- and was 8-8 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play. The Saints finished 3-23 overall and 0-16 in the GNAC.
Norris hit .478 in her final match and came just two aces shy of 200 for her career in helping the Wildcats hit at a .273 clip for the contest. Fifteen of Central's 16 uniformed players played in Saturday's match, including starts for all three seniors -- Norris,
Deidre Scheidt (Milton/Fife HS), and
Meggie Graf (Selah). Scheidt had two service aces and eight digs in her final collegiate appearance, which included a significant stint as the setter in the third set that resulted in a career-high nine assists, while Graf had three kills, six digs, and her only collegiate block.
Central emerged from eight ties and three lead changes in the opening set with its modified starting lineup by scoring 12 of the final 17 points in the first set. There were five ties and one lead change in the second frame as Saint Martin's scored the first three points before the Wildcats rallied and took the lead at 10-9 and never trailed again. Similarly in the final frame, Central broke a 4-4 tie with a run of back-to-back points and a 12-4 scoring surge en route to its easiest win of the match.
Norris and junior
Kady Try (Brentwood, Calif./Mead HS) emerged as the Wildcats' offensive leaders on Saturday, with Try adding nine kills in her first reserve role of the season. Setter
Carlee Marble (La Conner) played the first two sets and totaled 22 assists before turning setting duties over to Scheidt and freshman
Devin Larson (Mukilteo/Kamiak HS) in the third set.
Junior
Brandie Vea (Honolulu, Hawaii/Kalani HS) had nine digs in two sets to lead a balanced Wildcat effort defensively in the back row. Scheidt added eight while three others had six digs apiece. Junior
Bri Gregory (Bremerton) led Central's front-row defense with six assisted blocks.
Saint Martin's was led by Kirstyn Druzianich with eight kills while Samantha Dominiak added seven. Malia Ibarra was one of two Saints with 10 or more digs, finishing with a match-high 11.
