Turnovers Costly in Wildcats' Exhibition Loss at Eastern

Central Commits 21 First-Half Miscues in 101-49 Defeat to Division I Eagles

Box Score

CHENEY (Nov. 3) -- Senior Amanda Murdoch (Bozeman, Mont.) scored a team-high 13 points, but the Central Washington women's basketball team was unable to overcome 32 turnovers and 49 percent shooting by Eastern Washington in a 101-49 exhibition loss to the Division I Eagles on Tuesday evening at Reese Court.

Murdoch scored her points on 3 of 6 shooting while also going 5 for 6 at the free throw line. Central finished just 5 of 9 at the charity stripe for the game, while Eastern converted on 21 of 25 attempts at the line.

The Wildcats never led in Tuesday's game, giving up the first eight points of the contest and facing a double-digit deficit just 4:40 into the first half. Twenty-one turnovers in the first half contributed to a 36-point margin (59-23) at the intermission.

Central Washington shot 35.2 percent for the game, compared to a 49.3 efficiency for Eastern Washington. The host Eagles also had nearly twice as many made field goals (36) as the Wildcats did (19), although they did attempt 19 more field goal shots. A 16-point advantage for Eastern at the free throw line, plus a 14-turnover differential, aided EWU in the win.

In addition to Murdoch's point total, sophomore Sophie Russell (Olympia/River Ridge HS) scored nine points and junior Colleen Betteridge (Seattle/Chief Sealth HS) finished with eight. Both Russell and Betteridge were 4 of 7 from the floor. Seven of nine Wildcats to appear in the game scored.

Eastern Washington was led by Julie Piper with 23 points and nine rebounds including 10 of 14 shooting, while Brianne Ryan came off the Eagle bench to score 20.

Central Washington will not play again until its regular-season opener on Nov. 20 against Humboldt State at the Sodexo Tip-Off Classic in Seattle. The Wildcats' home opener is not scheduled to take place until Dec. 10 against Montana Tech.
