SEATTLE (Oct. 16) -- Central Washington University junior
Meg Ryan (Spokane/Mead HS) had a team-leading nine kills, but the Wildcat volleyball team was swept by 17th-ranked Seattle Pacific University 25-20, 25-22, 25-21 on Saturday afternoon at Brougham Pavilion.
With the loss, the Wildcats evened their overall record at 8-8 and 6-5 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play, while the Falcons improved to 18-1 and 10-1 in the conference.
As a team, the Falcons outperformed the Wildcats offensively with a .306 hitting percentage to Central's mark of .178. Seattle Pacific was led by Lindsey Wodrich who had 26 kills and setter Shelby Swanson who had 42 assists.
The Falcons jumped out to an early 8-1 lead in the first set but Central fought back and tied the match at 17-17 off a kill by freshman
Erin Smith (Selah). The Falcons then rattled off five straight points and the Wildcats were unable to keep pace losing the first set 25-20.
Seattle Pacific jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second set, but again, Central battled to tie the match at 10 apiece. Although Central never took the lead in the second set, they did tie the Falcons on five different occasions before Seattle Pacific took the set 25-22.
The third set went back and forth, as there were seven ties and five lead changes, but Central was unable to catch a rhythm and the Falcons won the third set 25-21.
The Wildcat offense was led by Ryan and Smith, who combined for 14 of Central's 28 kills.
The Wildcats will play three more road matches before returning home next. They visit Northwest Nazarene next Saturday (Oct. 23) before visits to Saint Martin's (Oct. 28) and Western Oregon (Oct. 30). Their next home match is Nov. 4 versus Alaska.
