MONMOUTH, Ore. (Oct. 30) -- The Central Washington University women's soccer team surrendered four second-half goals on the road against Western Oregon University Saturday afternoon and lost by a score of 4-0.
The Wildcats' record slides to 4-11-2, 4-8-1 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference. The Wolves earned just their second GNAC win of the season (2-11-0) while improving to 3-14-0 overall. The season series between Central and Western Oregon is evened at one win apiece, with Central winning the first meeting of the season 3-0 in Ellensburg.
The teams were deadlocked in the first half with Western Oregon taking a slight edge in shots at 4-3, but neither team was able to put pressure on goal.
Junior
Serena Tomaso (Enumclaw), Central's leader in goals and points, was given a red card at the 34:42 mark in the first half and was ejected from the game. This marked the first time since the 2004 season that a Wildcat player or coach received a red card. The Wildcats played the remainder of the game with just 10 players on the field.
“The red card was a big blow to us,” said head coach
Michael Farrand. “We fought hard in the second half but being down a player opened up opportunities for our opponent.”
Western Oregon took advantage of the Wildcats' one-player disadvantage and scored a goal just 9:14 into the second half to take a 1-0 advantage. WOU midfielder Kimberly Witmer then scored back to back goals giving the Wolves a 3-0 lead. The Wolves added an insurance goal in the 79th minute to finish with a final score of 4-0. The Wildcats had not given up four goals to a Western Oregon team since the 2003 season.
The Wildcats, although being down a player, were able to stay competitive offensively and tied the Wolves in second half shot attempts at 11.
The Wildcats finish up their season on the road against conference leader Seattle Pacific next Saturday (Nov. 6) at 1 p.m.
