ELLENSBURG (Oct. 9) -- Central Washington University junior
Amy Pate (Federal Way/Thomas Jefferson HS) scored her second goal of the season, but the women's soccer team was unable to contain Seattle Pacific University Saturday afternoon in a 5-1 loss.
The Wildcats' Great Northwest Athletic Conference record now falls below .500 to 3-4-0, with their overall record at 3-7-1. Seattle Pacific is now tied with Western Washington for first place in the GNAC at 5-1-1 and 8-1-2 overall.
Becca Woods got the Falcons off to a quick start scoring a goal in the eighth minute. Woods received a pass and kicked for the goal, the ball ricocheted off the left post and hit Wildcat freshman goalkeeper
Kori Butterfield (Duvall/Cedarcrest HS) in the back of the leg and rolled into goal.
The Wildcats answered back two minutes and 12 seconds later when junior
Brittany Franks (Yakima/West Valley HS) drilled a shot of the hands of the Falcons goalie and Pate gathered the loose ball and scored to tie the game at 1-1. The goal was Pate's second of the season and her third career goal against the Falcons.
The Falcons fired back in the 15th minute, scoring off a header by Brandi Hamre. Seattle Pacific would add another goal in the 35th minute, ending the first half with a 3-1 advantage over the Wildcats.
SPU forward Kellie Zakrzewski added two more goals in the second half, both coming on plays where she broke away from the Central defense for a one-on-one opportunity with Butterfield, providing the Falcons with a 5-1 advantage.
Central will next travel to Montana State Billings on Thursday, Oct. 14, to take on the Yellowjackets at 4 p.m. MDT before returning home on Oct. 16 to face off with Northwest Nazarene at 11 a.m. on the CWU Soccer Field.
