ELLENSBURG (Apr. 9) -- The Central Washington University baseball team managed just six hits in suffering its first shutout loss of the 2010 season, 10-0, to visiting California State University, East Bay, on Friday afternoon at the CWU Baseball Field.

The Wildcats lost their sixth consecutive game and fell to 6-23 overall on the season, while the Pioneers, in their first season as a provisional member of the NCAA Division II, improved to 15-22-1.

Central had three doubles and three singles against two Cal State East Bay pitchers, and advanced runners to third base in the second, fifth, and sixth innings. However, the Wildcats left the bases loaded in the second, and got runners to third in the fifth and sixth innings after two-out errors extended those frames.

The game was scoreless through two innings before Cal State East Bay took a 2-0 lead in the third on a two-out, two-run bloop single by Nick McManus. The Pioneers later added two runs each in the fourth and sixth, including the first of two two-run home runs in the game by Levi Josewski in the sixth. CSUEB then added four runs in the eighth, aided by an outfield error, a McManus triple, and Josewski's second two-run blast.

Central starting pitcher Bryce Hjellum (Kennewick/Kamiakin HS) struck out eight hitters, but was lifted after throwing 113 pitches in six innings of work. He surrendered 11 hits and six earned runs while suffering his sixth loss in eight decisions.

Six different Wildcats had one hit each, with doubles from seniors Ricky McKinney (Aberdeen), Evan Churlin (Monroe), and Kevin Walkenhauer (Yakima/West Valley HS).

Cal State East Bay totaled 15 hits, with three-hit games from Josewski, Stephen Gatehouse, and Alex Anicich. Josewski and McManus each drove in four runs for the Pioneers.

Left-hander Matt McCormick struck out five in six innings of work to earn the pitching victory, while Rich Kemp threw three scoreless innings to earn his first save of the season.

The two teams will continue their four-game series with a doubleheader beginning at noon on Saturday, followed by a single game on Sunday morning at 11 a.m.
