Tomaso's Hat Trick Leads Wildcats to Two-Goal Win over Saints

Box Score

LACEY (Sept. 25) – Junior Serena Tomaso (Enumclaw) recorded her first career hat trick for the Central Washington University women's soccer team Saturday afternoon as the Wildcats defeated Saint Martin's University, 4-2.

The Wildcats, who began the season winless through six games, are now on a two game winning streak improving their Great Northwest Athletic Conference record to 2-2 with a season mark of 2-5-1.

It only took Tomaso 7 minutes, 28 seconds to get Central on the board as she handled a pass from senior Kaycie Hutchins (Port Orchard/Bellarmine Prep) and hammered the ball into the Saints' net from 30 yards out to give the Wildcats a 1-0 advantage.

“Serena is playing really well right now,” said head coach Michael Farrand. “That goal she crushed from 30 yards out was amazing.”

The Saints responded a minute later when Jenny Baker got a one-on-one opportunity with Wildcat goalie Kori Butterfield (Duvall/Cedarcrest HS) and scored to tie the match at 1-1.

Tomaso and junior Amy Pate (Federal Way/Thomas Jefferson) teamed up and got the Wildcats off to a quick second half start. Pate laid the ball off to Tomaso who dribbled into the box and beat her defender and the Saints goalie scoring her third goal of the season to give the Wildcats a 2-1 lead just 28 seconds into the period.

After Saint Martin's scored another goal to tie the match at two in the 70th minute, Sophomore Carson McKole (Oak Harbor) scored her first goal of the season off an assist by Hutchins in the 75th minute providing the Wildcats with a 3-2 advantage.

Tomaso would add to the Central scoring barrage in the 84th minute recording her third goal of the match, helping the Wildcats to an overpowering 4-2 advantage. The hat trick was the first by a Central player since Kelsey Penn's trifecta at Chaminade on Aug. 29, 2007. The three goals also tripled Tomaso's season goal output giving her four goals on the 2010 season all of which have come in the last two games.

Defensively, Butterfield set a new career high with nine saves on 12 shots on goal by the Saints and improved her season record to 2-3-1.

The Wildcats look to keep their streak alive when they return home to host Simon Fraser on Sept. 30 at the CWU Soccer Field at 3 p.m.
