Box Score

TURLOCK, Calif. (Feb. 10) -- Central Washington University junior Derrick Webb (Ephrata) went 2 for 4 including a two-run home run, but the Wildcat baseball team was unable to contain the Cal State Stanislaus offense, losing 11-4 on Thursday afternoon at the Warrior Baseball Field.

The Wildcats are now 0-2 on the young season, while CSUS improved to 2-0 with Thursday's win.

Webb's blast got the Wildcats on the board first. Freshman Ethan Sterkel (Ellensburg) reached on a fielding error to lead off the third inning and advanced to second on a fielder's choice before Webb hit the team's first homer of the season to give Central a 2-0 lead.

The Warriors responded, however, scoring seven runs over the next three innings. Central chipped away at the 7-2 Warrior lead, adding two runs in the top of the seventh. With the bases loaded, junior Chaz Ocbina (Tacoma/Wilson HS) drew a walk, scoring Brandon Wang (Mill Creek/Henry M. Jackson HS). Senior Eric Sorensen (Kittitas) followed by hitting a sacrifice fly to left field, with Webb scoring from third base.

Junior Glen Reser (Spokane/Mead HS) also had a multi-hit game for Central Washington, going 3 for 3 with three singles. In fact, of the nine hits the Wildcats earned in the game, only one -- Webb's home run -- was for extra bases.

The Warriors turned the game into a blowout with four insurance runs on five hits in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Cal State Stanislaus starting pitcher Vinny Pacchetti gave the Warriors a strong outing, fanning 10 Wildcat batters in six innings of work while scattering seven hits. The Warriors also had four players with two or more safeties, led by David Contreras who was 2 for 4 with three RBI.

The Wildcats will stay in northern California, traveling to Hayward for the first of a four-game series against Cal State East Bay on Friday (Feb. 11) at 2 p.m. Left-hander Ryan Hastings (Lynden) is slated to make his CWU starting debut against the Pioneers on Friday.
