David Leid (Carson City, Nev./Carson HS) was 3 for 5 with three RBI, helping lead the Central Washington University baseball team to a 12-2 victory over California State University East Bay on Sunday at Pioneer Field.
The Wildcats end their six-game California road trip with a 3-3 record, including a 3-1 series victory over Cal State East Bay. The Pioneers fell to 2-5 with Sunday's loss.
Leid was one of three Wildcat batters to compile three hits in the game. Sophomore
Jimmy Ryerson (Seattle/Roosevelt HS) was 3 for 5, and junior
Derrick Webb (Ephrata) was 3 for 4 with two RBI.
Central Washington got a strong performance from senior starter
Palmer Brown (Sacramento, Calif./Rio Americano HS), who threw six innings and scattered six hits while allowing just one run. He also struck out one in earning his first win of the season.
CWU went ahead 1-0 in the second inning, as junior
Brett Bielec (Port Orchard/North Mason HS) scored Leid with a sacrifice fly. The Wildcats added to the lead with two runs in the third inning on a RBI double by junior
Brady Kincannon (Federal Way/Decatur HS) and a RBI single by Leid.
Holding a 3-1 lead, Central scored four runs on five hits in the seventh inning, as each of the first seven batters of the inning all reached base safely.
The Wildcats poured on four more runs in the eight, taking advantage of three Pioneer errors in the frame. Central Washington scored all of its eighth-inning runs with two outs, with Webb and freshman pinch-hitter
Clifton Coulter (Camas/Union HS) each driving in a run.
The Pioneers scored their second run in the bottom of the eighth, and the Wildcats countered with a single tally in the ninth.
Cal State East Bay starting pitcher Zach Aguirre (0-1) gave up three runs in six innings of work, striking out five, but the Pioneer relievers struggled against the Wildcats as three pitchers combined to give up nine runs and 10 hits over the final three innings.
Central Washington outhit CSUEB 15-8 and took advantage of six Pioneer fielding errors. The Wildcats played error-free baseball again on Sunday, finishing their six-game road trip with just five miscues (all in the first two games) and a .977 fielding percentage.
The Wildcats will next participate in the Guardian Plumbing, Heating & Air Conditioning Tournament in Lewiston, Idaho, where they will face Great Northwest Athletic Conference foes Saint Martin's on Friday (Feb. 18) at 10 a.m. and Western Oregon on Saturday (Feb. 19) at 3 p.m. Both games will be non-conference tilts.
