TURLOCK, Calif. (Feb. 9) -- The Central Washington University baseball team opened its 2011 season with a 9-3 loss to California State University Stanislaus Wednesday afternoon at the Warrior Baseball Field.

The Wildcats dropped their season opener for the fourth consecutive year. It was also the first game of the 2011 season for the Warriors (1-0).

The first four innings of the contest were scoreless and featured a pitching duel between Wildcat starter Brandon Rohde (Gig Harbor) and Warrior starter Andrew Stueve. Rhode surrendered just two hits in the first four innings while striking out four. But the CSU Stanislaus offense erupted in the fifth inning, scoring four runs on three hits off of Rhode to take a 4-0 lead.

The Wildcat bats responded in the top of the sixth as Jimmy Ryerson (Seattle/Roosevelt HS) and Nate Wallen (Bremerton/Central Kitsap HS) hit back-to-back two-out doubles, and Derrick Webb (Ephrata) followed with a RBI single to cut the deficit to two runs. CSU Stanislaus again added four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to extend the lead to 8-2.

Central opened the seventh inning with three straight singles by Brady Kincannon (Federal Way/Decatur HS) , Glen Reser (Spokane/Mead HS) and David Lied (Carson City, Nev./Carson HS) to load the bases. Wildcat senior Kris Henderson (Liberty Lake/Central Valley HS) then hit into a double play, on which Kincannon scored to make it 8-3, but the Warriors tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the inning for the final six-run margin.

The Wildcats were outhit by the Warriors, 11-6, and committed three errors which led to two unearned runs by CSU Stanislaus.

The two teams will conclude their two-game series on Thursday at 2 p.m. as Central Washington continues its six-game, five-day road trip to northern California.
