ELLENSBURG (May 1) -- Central Washington University junior
Brandon Wang (Mill Creek/Henry M. Jackson HS) was 3 for 3 in game one of the Wildcats' baseball doubleheader with Western Oregon University, but the hosts were outscored by a combined 27-6 score in falling 19-3 and 8-3 on Sunday afternoon.
Central Washington fell to 12-30 on the season and 5-23 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, while Western Oregon improved to 30-12, 20-4 in GNAC.
Western Oregon built an 8-0 lead in the opener, scoring four runs in both the first and second innings. The Wolves added two runs in the fifth inning, three in the sixth, and six in the seventh to reach their total of 19 runs. Central Washington's three runs came on RBI base hits by junior
Chaz Ocbina (Tacoma/Wilson HS) and Wang in the third and fifth innings, respectively, and on a bases-loaded walk by junior
Scott Cooper (Ellensburg) in the sixth inning.
WOU took a 1-0 lead in game two, but the Wildcats tied the game in the second inning on a RBI single by senior
Alex Milden (Yakima/A.C. Davis HS). The Wolves rallied to regain the lead, taking a 5-1 advantage in fourth inning.
Central chipped away at the lead, scoring two runs in the sixth inning, starting with a lead-off homerun by sophomore
David Leid (Carson City, Nev./Carson HS), and capped by a run-scoring single from sophomore pinch-hitter
Jimmy Ryerson (Seattle/Roosevelt HS). Western Oregon then added three insurance tallies in the seventh inning en route to the 8-3 final score.
Eleven different Wildcats hit safely on the day, lead by Wang's three hits. Ocbina, Milden, Leid, and junior
Brady Kincannon (Federal Way/Decatur HS) each had two hits.
In the twinbill, the Wildcats were outhit by the Wolves, 35-18. Eleven of the visitor's hits went for extra bases, including six home runs.
Western Oregon was led by Daniel Dillard, who had four hits, including a pair of two-run homers, and totaled six RBI. Six different WOU batters had at least four hits in the two contests.
The Wildcats will wrap up their 2011 season on the road with a pair of doubleheaders at Montana State University Billings next Friday and Saturday (May 6-7).
