BURNABY, B.C. (Sept. 15) -- The Central Washington University women's soccer team got first-half goals from junior Carson McKole (Oak Harbor) and freshman Danielle Brandli (Bellevue/Interlake HS) en route to a 2-0 victory over Simon Fraser University on Thursday night at Terry Fox Field.

The Wildcats improved to 2-1-2 on the season, including a 1-0-0 Great Northwest Athletic Conference record. The victory over the Clan was Central's first conference-opening win since beating Seattle University 2-1 six seasons ago.

"It has been awhile since we started conference play with a win," CWU head coach Michael Farrand said. “The girls started out well and played excellent defense. They earned this one.”

McKole gave the Wildcats an early boost scoring a goal in the 3rd minute of the contest on a pass from Brandli, her third of the season.

Just over 30 minutes later Brandli added her first collegiate goal of her career to give CWU a 2-0 advantage. Brandli took a pass from senior Brittany Franks (Yakima/West Valley HS) and outmaneuvered three SFU players to get a clean shot on goal.

“The individual efforts by Carson and Danielle were terrific,” Farrand added. “And Kori (Butterfield) had another good game in goal.”

The Central Washington defense held Simon Fraser to just two second half shots to help maintain the two-score lead. The Wildcats outshot their opponent for the second straight contest, this time by a 10-7 margin. Three of the Clan's seven shots were on goal, and each where smothered by CWU goalkeeper Kori Butterfield (Duvall/Cedarcrest HS), who recorded her second shutout of the season.

The Wildcats will next return to the States to face off with arch-rival Western Washington University in Bellingham on Saturday at 7 p.m.
