SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. (Sept. 5) -- The Central Washington University women's soccer team played its third consecutive overtime match to begin the 2011 season, losing 1-0 in the 105th minute to host San Francisco State University on Monday afternoon at Cox Stadium.
The Wildcats concluded their northern California road trip with an even 1-1-1 record, and with the win the Gators move to 2-0-0 on the season.
Nicole Vanni broke away from the Wildcat defenders in double-overtime to give SFSU the 1-0 victory. For the third straight match, CWU was outshot by its opponent, this time by a 14-9 mark. Of the nine Wildcat shots, five were on goal, which is two more than they accumulated in two previous matches combined.
“We were decent at times, and at times we just didn't do a very good job,” CWU head coach
Michael Farrand said. “We had chances to do some special things but just couldn't execute when we needed to.”
Despite giving up the goal, sophomore goalkeeper
Kori Butterfield (Duvall/Cedarcrest HS) had another solid outing for the Wildcats collecting six saves, bringing her season total to 18. Junior
Carson McKole (Oak Harbor) led the CWU offensive attack with five shots, while sophomore
Kelsy Villegas (Graham/Graham-Kapowsin HS) added three, all of which were on goal.
“We are tired and banged up,” Farrand added. “After three games and three overtimes, we are ready to come home.”
Central Washington will return home and take on Northwest University on Thursday, Sept. 8 at 5 p.m. in its final non-conference match of the 2011 regular season.
