Box Score
YAKIMA (Oct. 7) -- Senior
CARSON MCKOLE (Oak Harbor) accounted for seven total shot attempts, but the Central Washington University women's soccer team was held scoreless for the third straight game in a 1-0 loss to Western Washington University on Sunday afternoon at Yakima Valley Community College.
The loss drops the Wildcats to 3-7-2 overall and 2-5-1 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference matches. CWU has lost its last three matches by identical 1-0 scores. Western Washington, meanwhile, improved to 10-2-0 overall and 7-1-0 in the GNAC.
McKole, the Wildcats' goal-scoring co-leader, accounted for a majority of the CWU offense on the day as she had four of her team's five shot attempts in the first half and added three more attempts in the second half -- all of which missed wide left of the goal.
WWU, which held a 14-5 edge in shot attempts in the first half, finally broke through with the game's only goal on its first shot of the second half. The score came on a free kick by Ashton Griffen just outside the 18-yard box, giving the junior midfielder her first goal of the season at the 50:16 mark.
Only one shot attempt -- a try from CWU junior
NICOLE LAUGHLIN (Gig Harbor) at the 83rd minute -- made it on goal the rest of the way. The second half did feature four yellow cards and 12 fouls, however, as the intensity of the close game and the rivalry escalated down the stretch
CWU sophomore
KAYLA LIPSTON (Federal Way/Decatur HS) made four saves in the game, as did WWU senior Jamie Arthurs. Arthurs broke the WWU and GNAC career record for shutouts in the contest by holding an opponent scoreless for the 32nd time.
The Wildcats, who played their second consecutive "home game" in Yakima due to poor air quality in Ellensburg, are scheduled to have two more home games this next week. CWU is slated to face Montana State University Billings on Thursday (Oct. 11) and Northwest Nazarene University on Saturday (Oct. 13).
