Wildcats Fall Twice at Tournament of Champions

TURLOCK, Calif. (Mar. 31) -- The Central Washington University softball team had two drastically different performances in its two games on Saturday, but the end result was the same for the Wildcats as they lost to California State University, East Bay, 13-3, and to California State University, Monterey Bay, 3-1. The game versus CSUEB went five innings.

CWU finished pool play at 1-4 and is now 10-19 overall on the season. The Wildcats will face either Chaminade University of Honolulu or tournament host California State University, Stanislaus, at noon on Sunday at Pitman High School in Turlock.

The Wildcats fell behind 8-0 after one-half inning in the opening game against the Pioneers at a rain-soaked Art Rojas Ballfield on the Pitman High School campus. CWU was outhit 19-6 in the five-inning defeat.

In the later game against 16th-ranked CSUMB -- a game delayed due to the afternoon rains -- sophomore MARIA GAU (Woodinville) allowed just four hits and struck out a career-high 11 batters but the Wildcats managed just two hits and scored their lone run on a RBI groundout by freshman HEIDY WELLS (Tacoma/Stadium HS) in the top of the third inning.
