SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (Aug. 30) -- Sophomore goalkeeper Kayla Lipston (Federal Way/Decatur HS) made five saves, and the Central Washington University women's soccer team played to a scoreless tie with host California State University, San Bernardino on Thursday evening at Premier Field.

Both teams are now 0-0-1 on the season, having tied in their season opener. Thursday's contest was also the first-ever women's soccer meeting between the two schools.

“Today was a pretty good game for us, especially playing with adversity,” CWU head coach Michael Farrand said. “Coming away with a tie is a pretty solid result for us, and we had chances to win the game, especially in overtime.”

The Wildcats played without two of their forwards -- senior co-captain Carson McKole (Oak Harbor) and sophomore Hadli Farrand (Ellensburg) -- on Thursday as McKole, the team's leading scorer a year ago, sat out due to a yellow card accumulation from 2011. Farrand was injured in a scrimmage last week and did not make the trip.

In spite of that absence, CWU still had great chances to defeat the Coyotes. With senior Kelsy Villegas (Graham/Graham-Kapowsin HS) and sophomore Sydney Coleman (Auburn/Auburn Mountainview HS) starting up front, the Wildcats outshot CSUSB by a combined 4-1 count in the two extra periods before finishing with 11 total shots to the host's 14. According to Farrand, one of those opportunities was a point-blank chance by Villegas that sailed high in the first extra period.

“We played much better in overtime, and we had our chances to score,” Farrand added. “KAYLA LIPSTON and our defense did a great job keeping us in the game.”

Lipston, who was making her 10th career appearance and seventh career start, finished with five saves including two in the final 20 minutes of regulation.

Sophomore Savanna Moorehouse (Bonney Lake) led the CWU attack with three shot attempts, while three others -- Villegas, sophomore Danielle Brandli (Bellevue/Interlake HS), and freshman Lauren Duty (Black Diamond/Tahoma HS) -- had two shots each.

Cal State San Bernardino's Chelsey Jones also earned a shutout, making two saves, and Jani Carmona-Urbano led all players with five shot attempts for the Coyotes.

CWU has two more matches remaining on its trip to Southern California. The Wildcats visit 18th-ranked UC San Diego on Saturday (Sept. 1) before facing Point Loma Nazarene University on Tuesday (Sept. 4).
