BELLINGHAM (Oct. 5) -- Sophomore Amanda White (Maple Valley/Tahoma HS) made five saves in her third career start, and the Central Washington University women's soccer team held second-ranked Western Washington University scoreless until the 78th minute, but a pair of late goals by the Vikings propelled the hosts to a 2-0 win over the Wildcats on Saturday night.

The Wildcats saw a three-match win streak snapped, falling to 5-4-0 overall and 4-2-0 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play. Western Washington remained unbeaten on the year, improving to 9-0-0 overall and 6-0-0 in the conference.

Kristin Maris had both goals for WWU, converting a penalty kick in the 78th minute, then scoring off an Ashton Griffen corner kick with just 21 seconds remaining.

"The penalty kick truly turned the game around," CWU head coach Michael Farrand said. "It was a great game overall, though. Amanda was solid in goal for us, and our back line was solid together."

The Vikings had a 16-2 advantage in shot attempts, but CWU did have the first good chance of the contest, as junior Savanna Moorehouse (Bonney Lake), headed a corner kick over the bar in the 13th minute.

"I was very pleased with our effort, and impressed with how hard we fought throughout the game," Farrand continued. "Tonight was a good gauge for us to see where we are at, and if you take away a couple of plays and we could have taken it into overtime."

CWU returns home for a pair of contests next week, hosting Seattle Pacific on Thursday (Oct. 10) and Simon Fraser on Saturday (Oct. 12).
