SEASIDE, Calif. (Feb. 9) -- Senior
Marc Garza (Othello) went 4 for 4 with two runs scored and two RBI, and junior pitcher
Stuart Fewel (Portland, Ore./Wilson HS) allowed just one earned run in his complete-game pitching performance as the Central Washington University baseball team won game one of its doubleheader with California State University Monterey Bay, 5-2, on Saturday afternoon at the Otter Sports Complex. CSUMB won the nightcap, 4-0.
The Wildcats finished their season-opening eight-game road trip with a 2-6 record, while the host Otters are now 4-2 on the year.
Garza, the Wildcats' eighth-place hitter, singled in all four of his at-bats in game one and scored the first two runs for CWU. Junior second baseman
Joel Johnson (Olympia) was 2 for 3 in the game, and seven of the team's nine starters had at least one hit.
Fewel, meanwhile, scattered six hits to earn the complete-game win in just his second appearance as a Wildcat. He struck out just one and walked just two while evening his record at 1-1 on the season.
CWU fell behind 1-0 in the first, only to tie the game in the top of the third. Each team scored once in the fifth, before Garza drove home the go-ahead run with a single in the top of the sixth. The Wildcats then tacked on two insurance runs in the top of the eighth, with senior
Kyle Sani (Kennewick/Southridge HS) leading off the frame with a solo home run and Garza then driving home another run with a single to cap the scoring.
CWU outhit the Otters, 12-6.
In game two, the Wildcats surrendered a three-run home run in the first inning and a single run in the second in falling to CSUMB, 4-0.
Six different CWU pitchers took the mound in the finale, with the last four not allowing a run. However, junior starter
Jeff Gonzales (Bellevue/Newport HS) walked two and gave up the home run to Brian Haggett to put the Wildcats in an early hole, and CWU was unable to recover against two Otter pitchers. Jeff Owen struck out six and allowed two hits over six innings for CSUMB to earn the win, while the Wildcats had two hits in the seventh against reliever A.J. Quintero but were unable to score.
Four different players had one hit each for CWU, while Tommy George was 2 for 3 for CSUMB.
Central Washington will return to action next weekend, participating in the Guardian Heating, Plumbing, and Air Conditioning Tournament at Lewiston, Idaho.
