TURLOCK, Calif. (Apr. 7) -- Freshmen outfielders Remy Bradley (Richland/Hanford HS) and Michaela Hazlett (Purcell, Okla.) had two hits apiece, but the Central Washington University softball team committed four errors and lost to the University of Hawai'i at Hilo, 4-2, in the Silver Bracket semifinal round of the Tournament of Champions, presented by Mizuno, on Sunday afternoon at the Pedretti Sports Complex.

CWU finished the tournament with a 4-2 record and is now 16-13 overall on the season. UH Hilo improved to 33-15.

Bradley had a pair of doubles to left-center field, including a one to lead off the game as she helped the Wildcats get on the scoreboard first. Hazlett followed Bradley's double with a single to put runners at the corners in the top of the first, and junior Jill McDaniels (Walla Walla) then scored Bradley with a single to left field as the Wildcats rapped out three of their seven hits for the game in the opening inning.

UH Hilo tied the game in the bottom of the inning with three hits of its own. Kristina Victa led off with a double and then scored three batters later on a single by Emily Greene.

The score remained deadlocked until the bottom of the third inning, when the Vulcans scored twice with two out. After back-to-back singles to start the frame, CWU junior pitcher Maria Gau (Woodinville) kept UH Hilo in check after a pair of spectacular defensive plays by the left side of the infield. However, with two out and a pair of runners in scoring position, Brandi Wilson hit a ball to shortstop, and the throw by freshman Andrea Hamada (Walla Walla) was just wide as Wilson reached safely and both runs scored for a 3-1 margin.

The Wildcats got a single run back in the top of the fourth inning when sophomore Heidy Wells (Tacoma/Stadium HS) blooped a single into center fielder that drove in junior pinch runner Jordan Zurfluh (Adna) from second base.

Neither team scored again until the bottom of the fifth inning, when UH Hilo loaded the bases and picked up an insurance run on an infield error. Gau escaped any further damage by getting a pair of fly outs.

CWU got just one hit over its final two innings at the plate, with Bradley picking up her second double of the game with one out in the top of the seventh. She was left stranded on base after a pop out and strikeout that ended the game.

The Wildcats were outhit 8-7, and their four errors translated into three unearned runs. Gau (7-8) suffered the loss, while her pitching counterpart, Vanessa Salinas, struck out eight CWU hitters and earned the complete-game win.

CWU returns to Great Northwest Athletic Conference play next Saturday (Apr. 13), visiting Northwest Nazarene University for a doubleheader. The Wildcats' next home games will also be their last when they host Montana State University Billings on Apr. 20.
