SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (Sept. 7) -- Senior
Emmy Dolan (Castle Rock) combined for 28 kills and a .455 hitting percentage in two matches, as the 24th-ranked Central Washington University volleyball team divided a pair of matches to close out the Coyote Classic on Saturday. The Wildcats defeated Cal Poly Pomona in four sets before falling to Sonoma State University in four.
CWU finished the opening weekend with a 2-2 record, also splitting its two matches against nationally-ranked foes on Friday.
"I think it was a productive weekend," CWU head coach
Mario Andaya said. "It was a tough tournament but it showed us we are on the right track."
Dolan totaled 13 kills and a .591 hitting percentage in the Wildcats' 25-22, 27-25, 20-25, 25-16 win over Cal Poly Pomona in the morning match. She was one of two players to break double digits in kills against the Broncos, with sophomore
Rachel Hanses (Yakima/West Valley HS) posting a double-double with 14 kills and 11 digs.
"Emmy was a dominant force today," Andaya proclaimed, "and showed us what we can expect from her during her senior season."
Sophomore setter
Catie Fry (Tacoma/Mount Si HS), who represented CWU on the all-tournament team, finished with 44 assists and three service aces, helping the Wildcats to a .260 team hitting percentage.
CWU racked up 10 service aces against the Broncos, with junior
Lauren Herseth (Olympia) joining Fry with three aces. Herseth also finished with 10 digs, while junior
Kaely Kight (Spokane/Mead HS) finished with a team-high 14 digs. The Wildcats added nine blocks as a team.
Jessica Doerner led all players with 16 kills for Cal Poly Pomona, while Roxanne Cardona had a match-high 17 digs.
In the tournament finale against Sonoma State, Dolan totaled 15 kills and a .364 hitting percentage, and sophomore middle blocker
Kaitlin Quirk (Ellensburg) added 10 kills and a .421 hitting percentage, but the Wildcats committed 11 service errors and surrendered seven aces in their four-set defeat against the Seawolves.
"Sonoma is a good team, and they exposed some things we need to improve upon," Andaya said.
Each of the first three sets were relatively close, with CWU taking the first set by two points before falling 25-22 and 25-21 in the next two frames. The final set was a 25-17 Seawolf victory.
Dolan and Quirk were not the only Wildcats with double-digit kill totals. Senior
Jordan Offutt (Leavenworth/Cascade HS) finished with 11 kills, while sophomore
Linden Firethorne (Clinton/South Whidbey HS) accumulated nine kills in just two sets played. Kight tied her career-high with 32 digs, while senior
Erin Smith (Selah) totaled seven blocks and eight kills.
Sonoma State was led by the 17 kills of Caylie Seitz, while Ashley Robinson added 10.
CWU will continue its play on the road next weekend, traveling to Golden, Colo., for a four-match tournament at the Colorado School of Mines.
