CWU Softball Swept by Dominican

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. (Feb 22) --The Central Washington University softball team was only able to score two runs on the day as they were swept for the first time in the 2014 season by Dominican University by scores of 2-1 (Game one) and 3-1 (Game two), Saturday afternoon in San Francisco.

Game One
The Wildcats scored first with REMY BRADLEY (Hanford HS) driving in KATIE FOCHER (Missoula, MT/Sentinel HS) who reached base on an infield single earlier in the first inning.  Unfortunately, that would be the last run for the CWU who was held scoreless in the next five innings.

Central Washington had its chances to score though, as they out hit the Penguins 7-5.  The Wildcats biggest opportunity came in the third inning where KAILYN CAMPBELL (Cedarcrest HS) led off with a single followed by a double to left centerfield by JILL MCDANIELS (Walla Walla HS) that gave CWU two runners in scoring position with no outs.  The threat ended quickly as ANDREA HAMADA (Walla Walla S) attempted to lay down a squeeze bunt, but popped out to the first baseman who caught Campbell try to tag up at third base to record a double play.

Pitcher Maria Gua (Woodinville HS) had a solid outing for the Wildcats as she threw all six innings surrendering five hits and two runs while striking out four Penguins.

Campbell and McDaniels were both 2-for-3 in game one with Bradley, Focher and MICHAELA HAZLETT recording singles as well.

Game Two
The Wildcat offense again struggled to piece together more than one run despite outhitting the Penguins by the same 7-5 mark as the first game.

Dominican struck first scoring in the bottom half of the second inning on a single followed by a RBI triple.

Central tied up the score, plating one runner in the fourth inning with MAIKALA GALUSHA (Battle Ground HS) reaching base on a fielding error and later scored on an RBI single by starting pitcher KIANA WOOD (Aloha, OR/Aloha HS).  The Penguins answered right back by scoring two runs in the bottom of the inning to take the final 3-1 advantage.  CWU made one defensive mistake on the day and it just happened to be fatal, as both runs scored in the fourth inning for the Penguins was the result of a CWU fielding error that should have ended the inning with no damage done.  Instead one runner plated on the arrant throw and the following batter doubled to score the second run of the inning.

Wood, who was 1-for-2 from the plate with an RBI and a walk, also had a good day on the mound.  Despite dropping to 3-2 on the season, the freshman gave up five hits and just one earned run while fanning seven batters.

The Central Washington University softball team will look to rebound from their three-game losing streak as they play The Academy of Art tomorrow (Feb. 23) starting at Noon.
