Box Score 2 Ellensburg, Wash (April 19) – The Central Washington University baseball team concluded their final home stand of the season with a two-game sweep versus Holy Names University on Saturday, Senior Day, winning both games 8-5.
The day began with a ceremony honoring the ten graduating seniors.
"We have a great group of seniors," Head coach Desi Story said. "They were a huge part of getting us back on the right track last year, and then again this season."
Senior
Kurtis Pitcher (Seabeck, WA, Klahowya) took the ball in game one and went seven strong innings, striking out 12, for his second win of the year.
"We are playing really good right now and everything is clicking," Pitcher said. "It was nice to finish in front of my family and the fans."
The Hawks jumped on Pitcher early as the first three batters reached base, and ultimately scored on a three-run homerun by Zach Verlaan.
The Wildcats answered quickly in the bottom half of the frame when senior
Ethan Sterkel (Ellensburg, WA, Ellensburg) doubled in fellow senior
Eric Tinnell (Ephrata, WA, Ephrata) for the first Wildcat run of the game.
Senior
Scott Stone (Corvallis, OR, Crescent Valley) would come up two batters later and clear the bases with his fifth homerun of the year to cap the four-run inning.
Junior
Cory Welch (Las Vegas, NV, Bishop Gorman) relieved Pitcher in the eighth and struck out three in his two innings of work while picking up the save.
The Hawks, again, jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first two innings of game two. The Wildcats spoiled any chance of a Hawk's win as they would go on to score in every inning except the first and last.
The Wildcats used six pitchers in the game two, highlighted by Welch's league-leading tenth save in the final frame.
"I've been here for four years and to go out with a sweep and end on a good note was nice," Sterkel said.
The Wildcats will travel to Spokane, Tuesday, April 22 for a single game versus Whitworth before traveling to Billings MT, for a four-game set with the Yellowjackets.
"We are looking to take the rest of season one game at a time," Sterkel said. "One pitch at a time.
