Freshman power CWU softball to NCAA Sub-Regional Championship

Maria Gau fired against HSU
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ST. GEORGE, Utah (May 10) -- With their backs against the wall, the Central Washington University softball team defeated Humboldt State University 5-1 and UC San Diego 10-1 in two loser out games to advance to the NCAA Division II West Region Championship.

The Wildcats will play host Dixie State tomorrow at 11 a.m. and will have to defeat the Red Storm twice to advance to the Super Regionals next week.

The Wildcats got a major boost from freshman Kailyn Campbell (Duvall, WA) who had eight RBI on the day, including a six RBI performance against UCSD that was highlighted by a grand slam to give the Wildcats a 4-0 lead in the contest.

"Kailyn has ice in her veins and nothing fazes here," CWU Head Coach Mallory Holtman-Fletcher said. "She was so zoned in today and we were fortunate to have her up today with people on base."

Fellow freshman Kiana Wood (Aloha, OR) (9-3) stood in the circle in the second game and held the Tritons to just one run on five hits and two walks.

The Wildcats blew the game open in the seventh inning, adding six more runs, two of which came on a big homerun by Andrea Hamada (Walla Walla, WA).

Central Washington outhit UCSD 15-5, including three extra-base hits.

In the first game of the day, CWU Campbell drove in two runs on a double in the third inning, and the Wildcats added three more on a dropped fly ball by the Humboldt State left fielder with the bases loaded.

Starting pitcher Maria Gau (Woodinville, WA) was lights out in the contest, allowing one run on four hits while striking out three batters to improve to 20-9 on the season.

"As soon as she stepped on the field, I could tell she was going to have a good day, "Holtman-Fletcher explained about her ace pitcher.  "She mixed up her pitches well and she was motivated more than I have seen her before.  She left it all on the field."
