Wildcats seek first GNAC Title in school's history

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Ellensburg, WASH (May 9) – The Central Washington University baseball team collected win number 500, for head coach Desi Story, as the Wildcats shutout Saint Martin's University, 2-0.

The recently named conference Pitcher of the Year, Brandon Williams (Auburn, WA, Auburn Mountainview), delivered in the game one win. The junior tossed nine shutout-innings, allowing seven hits, while striking out eight.

Two Wildcat runs in the bottom of the first inning were all Williams needed.  Cory Welch (Las Vegas, NV, Bishop Gorman) led the inning off with a double, and Eric Tinnell (Ephrata, WA, Ephrata) quickly followed with a single to third, scoring Welch on a throwing error by the Saints' third basemen.

Two batters later, Ethan Sterkel (Ellensburg, WA, Ellensburg) singled to right field on a the first pitch he saw as Tinnell crossed the plate.

The Wildcats used a parade of pitchers to earn the second win of the day against the No. 1 seeded Western Oregon University.

Kurtis Pitcher (Seabeck, WA, Klahowya) threw four innings of two-run ball, as Willie Davies (Shoreline, WA, Shorecrest), Skye Adams (Vancouver, WA, Columbia River) and Welch combined for the final five frames allowing just one run.

The Wildcats held an early 3-1 lead, as they scored three runs in the second inning courtesy of a Joe Castro IV (Union City, CA, James Logan) three-run bomb.

The Wolves chipped at the lead with one run apiece in the fourth and seventh innings.

With the scored tied, Jesse White (Salinas, CA, Salinas) crossed the dish for the go-ahead when the Wolves' first basemen mishandled a bunt attempt by Jaykob Sells (Mountlake Terrace, WA, Mountlake Terrace). Tinnell would double two batters later, and another Wolves' error cultivated the go-ahead three-run inning.

Castro would add another insurance run in the final frame with a RBI groundout.

The Wildcats will be looking for the title-clinching win, May 10, as they look for its first Great Northwest Athletic Title in baseball in school history. Western Oregon University has claimed the top spot since the title's creation.

Game two would be played shortly after, if needed.
