CWU Volleyball Sweeps Saint Martins 3-0

Box Score LACEY, Wash. (Sept. 20) – The Central Washington University volleyball team responded to their first conference loss of the season by sweeping Saint Martin's University 3-0 (25-20,25-20, 25-18) Saturday night in Lacey.

The Wildcats even out their Great Northwest Athletic Conference record at 1-1 and improve to 8-2 on the season.  Saint Martin's falls to 0-3 in conference and 2-11 overall.

"We were looking forward to getting back on the court," CWU Head Coach Mario Andaya said. "Losing left a bad taste in our mouths and it was good to see the girls respond."

Central Washington held the lead for the entirety of the first set leading by as many as six points, led by reserve KIAH JONES who had six kills in the set.

Set two was much of the same as the Wildcats never trailed, however, the Saints tied the set on multiple occasions.  Central Washington pulled away late in the set on kills by JULIE HULBERT and LINDEN FIRETHORNE coupled by a big block by CATIE FRY and Hulbert.  The Wildcats hit a staggering .395 in the set with just one attack error on 38 attacks with 16 kills.

Set three saw the Saint's take their first lead of the contest, but it was short lived as the Wildcats raced to a 25-18 win in the third set to take home the victory 3-0.

Jones led a Wildcat attack that hit .312 with 14 kills on 35 attempts.  Both Firethorne and JORDAN DEMING had nine kills on the contest, and Fry secured a double-double with a team high 38 assists and 10 digs.

"Catie got our middles involved tonight which opened up our outside hitters and kept the Saints of balance," Andaya said. "And Kiah stepped up once again. She has embraced her role, had another great night, and has set a standard for what we can expect from her."

The Wildcats will play a rare Monday game against Western Oregon on Sept. 22 at 7 P.M. in Monmouth, Ore.
