Wildcats Get Buzzed by Yellowjackets Losing 1-0

Box Score ELLENSBURG, Wash (Sept. 25) – The Central Washington University women's soccer team lost 1-0 to Montana State University Billings on the team's first game of a three-game road trip.

The loss leaves the Wildcats at 2-5 overall, 1-2 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference as the Yellowjackets improve to 3-1-1 overall, 1-1-1 in GNAC.

The Wildcats faced heavy pressure early in the game. Keeper Kayla Lipston (Federal Way, WA, Decatur) and the defense faced four shots and a corner kick before Bailey Martoncik (Maple Valley, WA, Tahoma ) recorded CWU's first shot.

Lipston finished the day with three saves out of four shots on goal. The one that got away came in the 43rd minute when MSUB midfielder Agen Heffernan collected the ball at the top of the box and struck a right-footed goal to the near post.

"We are having some trouble in certain positions," Head Coach Michael Farrand said. "We need to start connecting more passes and working together on defense."

The best scoring opportunity for the Wildcats occurred in the 70th minute when Danielle Brandli's (Bellevue, WA, Interlake) shot hit the crossbar and was cleared by the Yellowjacket defense. The Wildcats battled until they were awarded their lone corner kick of the game in the 76th minute. CWU was out shot by MSUB 3-to-11 on the day.

"When you're down a goal early, you have to try and throw everything at them." Farrand added. "We pushed hard at the end of the second-half."

The Wildcats will travel to Northwest Nazarene University, Saturday, Sept. 25 to battle the Crusaders in game two of the team's three-game road trip. Kickoff is scheduled at 1 p.m. MDT.

"Mary (Trigg) has got them off to a great start, they are on a five-game unbeaten streak with what they did earlier today." Farrand said speaking of Crusaders. "We have to show up and play our kind of game."
